Hydraulic return line location question

I have a Long 610DT, the return hydraulic line dumps into the top of the tranny. Would it be better if I added line to the fitting so it dumped the fluid in below the level of the fluid in the tranny? This would be so the fluid would not get aerated in the tranny. Am I thinking correctly or just too cautious? Thanks for the help..........Brian

My Kubota return went to the top of the HST case right at the fill point.

Not to argue here, but if the return line is setup and is out of the way, and is now working good, then moving the line will not do much. If it will look better, then move it.

The return line is dumping fluid from the cyl, or motor at such a low pressure that you are probably not generating any bubbles, no more than if you were to add fluid to the hyd tank.

Aeration in a hyd tank is usually caused by a leak in the suction line, or when the fluid is relieved at high pressure, or cavitating fluid.

While returning oil to the tank, may be better the way you propose, I'd be leary of changing the factory design as they 'may' be lubricating some shaft or gear in there with the return fluid?

Thanks for the replies guys! The return oil is not lubing any thing it is just shooting down to the level of the hyd. fluid in the tranny. I think I am going to add a line to the fitting, just for piece of mind, and I have it all tore apart right now anyway. Thanks again...........Brian

Bmod,
depending on the flow rate or oil velocity a downline will help prevent aeration. If the oil has any velocity it will pull air into the mix kind of like a garden hose creates bubbles when filling a 5-gallon bucket.

Take care where you put that return line, if it is to close to the suction (reservoir out) or points directly at it you WILL get aeration.
