This weekend my brother and I are going to jointly purchase a three point hitch mounted log splitter that uses the tractor hydraulics. The splitter will be used on my New Holland TC40DA and his future John Deere 4520.

Since the splitter will be moving back and forth between tractors are there enough differences in hydraulic oil specs to cause any trouble with the tractor hydraulic systems?

Farmers routinely rotate implements with hydraulic cylinders among different tractor brands so I wouldn't think it would cause a problem but I thought I should run this by all of you.

Won't be any problem doing this.

As long as you are using Deere or NH fluids I'd think your find. I would not what to mix a synthetic or low quality walmart oil.

That low quality walmart oil says it meets the NH 134d spec, as well as the jd hyguard spec... same as the low cost Tractor supply UTF oil.. same as fina bulk tractor fluid, same as napa UTF fluid... see where this is going?

I wouldn't however mix it with a UDT/superUDT /synthetic oil.

The other name brand oil I would keep out of the mix if possible is CaseIH HyTran. Lower viscosity than most other hyd/trans/wet brake oils.

Interesting.. since most UTF oils spec that they replace NH134, jd303, hyguard, hytran.. etc..

Difference between replacement and duplication. Kinda like "close enough" and "exactly". For example, 70's and 80's IH tractors get along better using John Deere or Ford hydraulic oil than either JD's or Fords will using Hytran. The current HyTran Ultra or whatever may be different due to the amalgamation of Case, David Brown, Fiat, New Holland, Steyr, Steiger and Ford engineering into one business unit.

My message was only directed at direct UTF replacements.. hytran 'ultra' sounds more like a udt/ super' / synthetic oil.. I'm not familiar with it. I wouldn't reccomend mixing / replacing an oil that specced 'super' udt.. Like a kubota... with plain utf.. etc.

I am saying the original HyTran is less viscous than NH134 or JD HyGard. I share your lack of knowlege about HyTran Ultra.

I keep looking for "low quality Wal-Mart oil", and I can't find any. It all meets or exceeds my tractor specs. I guess it's just a myth.

Wal-Mart doesn't even make oil products. They buy it from Shell, Texaco, Penzoil, Castrol, Etc. and re-label it "Super Tech".
