Hydraulic log splitter

If you hold the lever in extend until it whines, what is the pressure?

Or try to split a log sideways.

You have to use a real load like a sideways log as JJ said. It does not take much pressure to move a cylinder with no load.

If you hold the lever at the stops, and don't get about 3000 psi, then something is wrong, and it could be several things.

Cyl is bypassing, bad seals,

Relief valve is stuck open.

Piston nut has come off the end of the shaft.

Pump leaking internally.

Pump not turning at the correct rpm.

Today I finally used the log splitter to split some logs. I also did as J J suggested I put a 9 inch hickory log in sideways and it did squeal and it almost cut the log in half and the pressure gauge went up to around 2,000 psi before I backed it off. I had to get a sledge hammer to beat the log off the wedge. I wonder how many tons of force it is producing. I only had the pt throttle about half open

You can probably do better on the pressure, as your machine should produce about 3000 psi.

So set the relief valve on the log splitter valve to about 2950 psi

If your 4 in bore cyl is using about 3000 psi, the force is about 37,699 lbs, or 18.75 ton.
