I had to dismantle my mtd log splitter due to a crack in the reservoir. When I took off the filter housing the spring was loose in it. Anyone know how it is suppose to be in there? I don't see any other parts in there. IMG_0126.JPG

You're missing the poppet valve, it allows the oil to bypass when the filter is restricted.............Mike

Thanks...It must not have been installed during assembly.

That, or else it broke and is now in the bottom of your hyd tank...........Mike

Unfortunately this is a all to common problem. I believe it happens during cold weather when the fluid is not allow to warm some before operating. The broken pieces can block the suction hose starving the pump or worse damaging the pump.
