I intend to swap out my old hydraulic filter for a new one without first draining the hydraulic fluid from the tractor...has anyone ever done this?...the fluid looks good however I feel the filter should at least be changed to eliminate any possible contaminants in the system.....is there an issue with hydro fluid gushing out when the old filter is removed before installing the new one or is the fluid simply resting at the bottom of the engine/transmission below filter level? :confused2: thanks...twister

Just put a catch pan under it, it will not gush out, just replace with the new one as quick as possible. You will probably need to put about a 1/2 gallon back in with the liquid in the filter and what you loose.

That's what is done on most by the manual. Mine is filters every 200 hours and fluid with filter every 400 hours. Just have the new filter ready and won't lose much.

As others have said, I had to top off the tank with a little less than a gallon, I was slow!

Spin off, put new one on (make sure you put a little oil on gasket, or you will have a heck of time removing the next filter).

On Kubotas, the trick is to put a shop vac on the fill port. The suction will prevent anything coming out when changing filters or doing work down there. Probably works on Kiotis too.

Nice idea and will try the next time. Never thought of that. Thanks

Did you end up doing this? I did mine, and it sure gushed out uncontrollably.... I managed to just screw on the new filter as fast as I could. I ended up losing at least a gallon of fluid if not more. Once again you can't trust the manual. Like you, I saw that they call for just changing the filters (both HST and Trans) but NOT the fluid. Yet, the fluid gushed out on me. Again, if they would have just field tested it more...... Anyway, that was my experience and I thought would it be that dang hard to just put a heavy duty petcock/close lever right above the filter to make it really easy to just change the filter?? Now I'm curious how it worked for you. I have an NX series, maybe they are different.

Thanks jabelding....I will do that... ...twister

Does work very well.
Buddy I work with had to change the suction line shut off valve on a plow truck, roughly 20 gallons of oil, 1 1/2" suction line. He shuts the valve which is right on the tank, takes off the suction line and doesn't lose too much oil as it's a downhill run to the pump at the front of the truck. Gets up, hooks up the vacuum, because it was a tight fit in the filler, he cleans it off and wraps a bunch of tape around the hose and filler to hold it in place.
He turns on the shop vac, gets back under the truck and starts to turn the fitting out of the tank, out it comes along with the oil....he put the hose on the wrong end of the vacuum, never laughed so hard when he came out, looked like a drowned rat.........Mike
