My JD 650 for no reason and no use, basically quit working in regards to the lift and tilt for the FEL hydraulics. I changed hydraulic fluids last month, cleaned the screen, etc. No problem then. I have not used the bucket but once. The rear hydraulics seem real slow as well. It hesitates even when it raises. There was some small leakage around one of the quick disconnect hoses. Could this be the problem. Is there air in the line, if so, do you bleed it??????????

I'm no expert... however I have a friend who has had hydraulic problems with his JD ... I think it's a 650 but won't swear to it... has had to twice replace the pump... all he does is use a 3ph shredder....not many hours, either. I helped him do it one time. Should not need to bleed the system following fluid replacement and filter replacement. Make sure that if FEL has any quick connect hoses that they are fully engaged. If problem is with both FEL and 3ph,then sounds like the pump to me.

I have read somewhere that if you disconnect your FEL while the engine is running you can sometimes create back pressure that will ruin your pump. Dont know if thats what happened but just passing it on. I think I read it on Hoye Tractors website.

Did you put the correct hydraulic oil in it?

yes, used Hydroguard John Deere. I found out I have a leak in one of the hydraulic FEL lines. If it is leaking, can it be sucking air as well and not working. Fluid levels are above normal level so I know that is not an issue for filling reservoirs of hydraulics. I have a hard believing it is the pump when the loader was used only once in the last month for lifting the tongue of an utility trailer and moving it on concrete about 20 feet.

Yes. (you can't post just "yes", have to have 5 characters. Go figure.)

The pump is bad. I took off a high pressure hose, put it in a bucket and nothing pumped. The 3point and loader do not work. I expect the milky transmission fluid that I changed was the culpret. Previous owner had a bad shift boot that allowed water in. Even though I changed the fluid, it still was slightly milky. Now that I know it is bad, From my technical manual this looks like a fairly easy fix, or am I wrong, do I need to buy a new pump. I have not taken it apart yet and wanted to get some feedback on whether I can fix this, if a hydraulic shop should fix it, or if I should just buy a new pump.

After tearing the pump apart, I discovered all the gears, brass bushings, casings were fine. The culpret ( I believe is part number 5) a gasket. The gasket is cracked half-way around and all elasticity, flexibility seems to be lost(flimsy). For the more experienced tractor owners/dealers, would this cause total failure of the hydraulic pump? I could get the three point or the loader to raise about 4 feet off the ground, but it would take about 5 minutes of jockeying the levers back and forth to do so.

Mostly posting to let you know someone is reading your posts. This is not my area of expertise but have a couple comments.

The way you describe the suspect part and what I can tell from the pics, is this part actually a shaft seal? If it is and is no longer doing its intended job, I could see possibly 2 things that could happen. One, possibility of sucking air into the hyd system and the other the possibility of loosing some hyd fluid into the engine. If sucking air that could explain the lack of fluid being pumped.

Hope that someone that really know their stuff here come to your rescue.

I don't think the seal is your problem. I know a little about hydraulics, so I'll do my best.
Usually, unless the pump grenades, it is difficult to tell if it's bad by disassembly, you need to meassure everything and make sure your tolerances are within limits. Did you change your suction strainer? You could have stirred up gank from the bottom of your tank and clogged the strainer. I have traced more low flow/pressure problems to the suction side than the pressure side. If the suction side is failing, you will never get pressure to develop. Try that and let us know what happens.

Leakage around a qd should not cause this problem.
