Hydraulic cylinder repair

I have a 100 Farm loader on my JD1250. I am trying to repack the bucket cylinders on it. At the bottom end of the cylinder housing, there is a large snap ring holding the piston in. My question is how do I get this snap ring off? It's not your typical snap ring with the 2 holes for the tool. These are shaped like this / \ on the ends. Please let me know of any helpful hints/tips. Thanks.

There is a special snap ring plier for those. I bought one from snap on.
