I have a cylinder off a Massey backhole. I can not get the rod end off to repair the seals. It has a nut type end on it that will not turn. It also has a ring (i think) that looks like it is installed through a hole in the end. Kind of like a snap ring. Does this need to be removed before I can take this end off?

Typically cylinders with a screw in end cap have a locking system to prevent the cap from accidently turning loose, such as a small screw or bolt or in your case it could be the snap ring.

How do I get this "Snap Ring" out? It is not like a standard snap ring that I have seen. It is like it is driven into the hole in the side.

pictures would be worth a thousand words here

If it's a lock-wire (round or square) you'll need to free up that gland head to rotate it and "unwind" the wire.....the wire may not come out otherwise.....:(

Sometimes it's best to chuck the gland nut in the vise with the lock-wire slot up.....that way you can heat it gradually and pour oil in the slot at the same time jiggling and torquing the cyl base with a chunk of steel bar in the cyl base pin mount for leverage (big pipe on the end for cheater)

This is assuming you have a lock-wire setup.....Pix would be best

Here are a couple of pics. I also wonder if you could tell me which way the nut would turn to remove this lock-wire? Backhoe 01.jpg

You will have to turn the hex nut in or out so the wire is not binding . Then squirt some oil in the slot and pull the wire out. Getting a good grip on the wire will be the hard part. After removing the wire the gland should unscrew.
Good luck.

Clockwise looking at it from your pix.....

Ya got to get that nut to turn, no matter what, if it ain't turning, it ain't coming out without some serious work....

If you can get enough wire out for a vise-grip to latch on then use a buddy to lightly tap on the vise-grip to help pull out the wire while turning the gland

Don't be afraid to heat it up with an acet torch.....as long as it's not heated to melting point it'll clean up afterwards.....best to heat up hot, try twisting, then let cool naturally....repeat the steps over....many times they come loose after 3 or 4 times

Inside on the end of the wire it has a short 90 deg bend that is tucked in to a short hole in the gland that is suppose to help push out the wire while turning......but these break off internally all the time so the vise-grip will help pull it out......sometimes in order to latch on to the wire a slot can be sliced in the barrel (about 3/4" parallel to the wire) then pry out stub of wire.....afterwards you can weld up the slot/slice that was put in it

After removing the wire the gland should unscrew.
Good luck.

Once the wire is out the gland from turning clockwise it will pull straight out......No threads on this style gland, the wire does all the work
