Hydralic Trash Pump - vs PTO

Wondering if anybody has used a hydraulic trash pump powered with their tractor. Can run dry without any damage AND output seems to be much higher than PTO models -- and for less $$$

How much head do you need? The pump in the video isn't pumping with more than a few feet of head, not much work being done.

I would use it to pump over a small dyke -- a few feet in elevation. My discharge hose would need to be 50 feet or so. This clip shows the 4" model pumping in an actual application.

The other thing is this: my tractor has a safety feature which prevents the PTO from operating unless I am in the seat. A PTO pump would require strapping down the seat like I do when chipping trees. I have power beyond, so the hydraulics are ready to use.

Can your tractor hydraulics handle this? I'd think there is a lot more power available from the PTO than from the hydraulics.

I see PTO pumps that will run off your tractor that will deliver more water against a lot more head than they show in the video. I don't find any mention of the head in specs for the unit you are linking to.

As for the PTO safety switch, isn't there a way to disable it for standing use? On my JD 870 you just tilt the seat up and lift the switch to the up position.

You can do this if you can check the hydraulic flow required by the pump. I would also compare the cost of a dedicated trash pump too. Using a hydraulic drive may be convenient but is less efficient than a pto pump if it isn't going to see much use then it would not matter. If you are planning on pumping a lot of water a separate trash pump would be my choice, I prefer the ones with Honda engines.
