I picked this splitter up used a couple weeks ago. It starts on the first pull when cold (primer pumped 3 times as the directions call for) and it will split the first couple pieces of wood just fine. The engine is the B/S 675 series 190cc.

After about 2-4 minutes of run time it will just quit. At that point it's hard to start again and when it does start it will only run for a second or two before dying again.

I was wondering if you had some ideas on what I can do myself before I take it to a shop or think about a new motor. My guess is that I bought someone else's problem that they didn't want to deal with.

Thanks in advance for the troubleshooting help.

Gummed up float on the carb is what my first guess would be.

Had the same thing happen on a snowblower of mine. Would run perfect for 5-10 minutes then fall flat on it's face. Rebuilt the carb and cleaned it out real well and found out that the needle valve was getting stuck and that it wasn't hooked on the float right direction. Once out was hooked up the right way, ran like a champ.

Thanks, I will check that out. I spent a bit more time on it last night and found out the butterfly valve is sticking....pretty much stuck open unless it's in the off position.

Both of you were on the money. I removed, soaked and cleaned the carb, reinstalled it - and it runs like a champ. I installed an inline fuel filter and fuel shutoff while I was at it.

Thanks again for the advice.
