I have an Huber M500 Maintainer I think the year is about 1950. There is a unit between the engine (Continental 4 cyl) and the transmission. It contains the governor and what I believe is the hydraulic pump, at any rate there is a dip stick that says use Type A Fluid. What the heck is the unit and what fluid should I put in it.

The unit is a torque converter and you should add Type A automatic transmission fluid... but you really can't get that easily anymore so just use a Dextron ATF, any version II, III, VI should do.
