Seeing skip post up about his XUV problems I figured it was time I make a formal request for help on my problems.

I have an 06 HPX which has started to have a huge power loss. It's most certainly not the engine is somewhere around the clutch/belt system. The backstory on it all is one day I landed on a tree stump (darn beavers), the stump went through the splash guard and aparently hit my primary clutch cover. Now it sounds/feels as if the belt is slipping (I have experience with this when my pully was falling apart) but I replaced the belt and the pully is fine so I can't figure out what it is.

I don't have a lot of knowledge on the CVT transmissions but I also happened to notice that my primary clutch cover has the end of it curled up so there's maybe a 1/4" gap running around there. Could I be I just need a new cover and that is somehow messing with my clutch ? Could the fact that there is almost certainly dirt in there cause it to 'slip' ? Oh one more thing it doesn't freewheel anymore and when you stop it shudders because it never really goes into nuetral (short of taking it out of gear) and will constantly move when it's in gear and you don't push on the gas.

Sounds like the sheave may have trash in it.
That would keep the rollers from going there full travel.

Jack it up and watch the belt as you accelerate.
The belt should rise in the sheave fairly consistent with acceleration.

I'll try that but whatever it is would have to be really stuck in there. Another thing I forgot to mention is it's been like this for about 2 months.. I also replaced the clutch wear buttons and the belt at the same time so it has had a somewhat good looking over. I really believe it's something to do with the clutch because the gears grind whenver they're changed, aometimes it's impossible to pull it out of gear, and it was what took the brunt of the force when I landed on that stump. But what I don't understand is what exactly could have been done to it ? Again that's mostly due to me knowing very little about it. Does anyone know if it's safe to run without a clutch cover at all for a short test run ? Or are they some sort of govener device for the clutch ?

when i changed my belt i blew out my clutch and cleaned it out really well then i came back and oiled it up with some "remington gunoil" with teflon. you can buy it in the gun section at walmart it comes in a aerosal can. if you wanna get all the gunk out get a can of "powder blast" and spray it down with that first.they sell "powder blast" in the gun section riight next to the gun oil.. i need to take mine down again because i tore my drain plug off and the enclosure filled with muddy water so i need to clean the clutch out again. but thats how i clean mine.

i wouldn't run without it. but as for as cleaning it out use the powder blast it's like brake cleaner. and as for as the grinding di you notice you hpx idoling any higher ? it might be grinding because it's idoling just a tad bit to high.try adjusting the idol down some.

No the engine seems perfectly normal and there's nothing unusual there really. The reason I want to know if I can run without the cover is so I can see if it's rubbing on that or something. I worry it does more then just protect the clutch though and plays a role in the operation so if I took it off I might be faced with a complete failure.

But like I said it's not just grinding it's the fact it won't pull itself out of gear when you come to a stop, it's having a hard time getting up to speed, and it also sounds different when you turn it off. There was always that familar sound of the engine stopping and then I dunno how to describe it a tap or something coming from the clutch area. All gators have it but now I don't have that tap or whatever it is.

I will try that cleaner stuff as well, hopefully I will have time to take a good look at it tomorrow I was busy all day today.

With the trans in neutral (parking brake on) you should be able to see the clutch pulley move in and out when you rev the engine.

yes thinking about it you should be able to run without the cover. i hade to remove the cover to install the clutch enclosure. and inplace of the cover they give you a fan so yes you should be able to run without it .but why?? do you want to see if they are workin properly?as for seeing if it's rubbing on it does the cover have a dent in it?

The gold(ish) colored cover is what I believe to be damaged. Last i remember the very edge where it meets is open now and not closed like it is in this picture. What I plan on doing it taking it off blowing it out and seeing how it runs. If it runs great then all I gotta do is run over to deere and order me a new cover. If all is not well then I'm in a world of hurt.

it could be binding if it's bent.i do remeber you saying something about putting the buttons thatgo in one spot into another spot because you broke one or something.you don't think that could be causeing it??

I should check into that. It was one of the old buttons that wasn't worn out. If it wore differently then the new ones maybe it did that. It had this problem ever since my little incident with the tree and I was just hoping it would go away with the button change. I thought it did at first but then it came back soon and just got worse and worse.

No lube, I didn't really know you could/should do that until you mentioned it a couple posts ago since it doesn't mention that in the manual. Cleaning did take place at the same time as I redid the clutch wear buttons, belt, and whatever else needed to be done then.

when i took mine apart i noticed it wasn't sliding open like it should so i gunked it down with that power blast stuff or blrak cleaner they both the same. and let it dry well first i blew it out but then after it was dry i srpayed that remington gun oil it has that teflon in it . that stuff is pretty good stuff to use i quirt it down my choke cable while i push and pull it and i lube that up pretty good too.all my springs and bolts and nuts on the carb and engine get a coat of it.not to mention when i was it i spray the whole engine down with son-of-a-gun tire cleaner amd that is oily it'self but it keeps the hoses flexable and not dry.i spray it all over my hood and fenders too it helps to clean the mud off plus it helps with the plastic.not to mention it makes it shine.lol i mean don't you use arnorall on you plastic and vinyl dash boards?so why not your plastic hpx fenders and hood.the stuff works like pam mud slids right off.lol

Armor all is like crack for plastics and it is to shiny. lol. I use 303 protectant and griots garage rubber and vinyl protectant on my car but my gator gets water/car wash solution and that's it.

I show her who's boss. That's why mine is still going and didn't just give up with that tree. :D

ha!!i took out two trees with mine.lol but the trees also took out my fenders . but i have to blame some of the damage on the bottoming out so i guess it was a 50/50 deal.lol the beast thing to do after riding is to wash it down good and then lube it up . there ain't nuthin that will absorb oil or greaes faster than dried mud or dust. i still ain't got my fenders or lights.i guess i'm waitin to finish them off. so did you blow out the clutch and lube it up?and if you need a cover i still have mine off my hpx. you pay shipping and it's yours for free. thats what bud's are for right? just check the part numbers to see if they match and i think they will and if they do and you want it let me know.

I haven't messed with it yet. I had to mow today and it hasn't had a chance to cool. If it does get cooled off enough I might take it off and blow it out but if not I will probably get that cleaner stuff and oil then on tues do it.
