This is a real pet peev of mine. I see many manufacturers using different stats on their equipment now....... obviously so it is near impossible for the consumer to compare apples to apples. One will use HP, another will use CCs (with no mention of HP), and yet another will use torque figures.

Its just plain foolishness.

I've also noticed the ratings are done by the manufacturer of the engine in many cases. What the heck was wrong with listing hp, been that way for years? Maybe they're screwing with ratings so much they need to hide the real facts? Maybe they think by rating an {example}engine 850 series or 205 cc or {this is the 1st one that threw me} 8.50 gross torque, it will make the engine seem stronger then it is? Of course at a quick glance they would have labeled the engine 8.50 which us older folks would have thought 8.5hp. One of corporation best sayings is, "change is good" especially when your trying to screw with Johny consumer

I agree...it makes it ruff when things get changed. I am still working to overcome liters vs cubic inches in car engines.

205cc would be a big 5.5hp motor. Most 5hp motors with overhead valves are in the 125cc range.

Your old Briggs probably didnt have overhead valves so it needed more cc's to make 5hp.

Harbor Freight sells 5hp Subaru horizontal shaft motors which are excellent. They start immediately even after months of sitting. Northern Tool will have something similar, probably in the $150 range
