How to tell which direction an engine shaft is turning?

I'm gonna buy an horizontal shaft engine for my backhoe later. So I can direct couple a hydraulic pump to it.

But I was wondering. How do you determine the direction (Counterclockwise/Clockwise) the shaft is turning? "So I can get the right pump" Do you look at it from the front at flywheel or from the back at the shaft?

Hope I explained that good enough. lol If not let me know and I'll try to explain better.

Hi Chad. Assuming you are looking at a manual start engine, just look at the rope start and you can figure out which way that will spin the engine

Here's the engine I'm thinking of purchasing.

DuroMax 16 Hp., 1'' Shaft, Recoil/Electric Start Engine - XP16HPE XP16HPE

So for this engine. I would need a clockwise rotation pump right?

Yup! When you are facing the "front" of the engine or the flywheel, that's clockwise. Anything you connect direct to the output will turn clockwise also.
