Tractor
John Deere 3320
Folks,

I have a JD 3320 and a 2004 Chevy Silverado pickup truck with a 6 cylinder engine. I want to size a trailer to haul the tractor to a place I do volunteer work at and to haul it to the shop for repairs. Both places are less than 50 miles. I know nothing about trailers. How do I start, what size do I look for ?

The pickup has a towing package on it so it must be capabile of towing something , how do I know it's capabile of towing a trailer with the 3320 on it ?

I'll do the work looking up weights and specs I just need a direction to start off on....

Thanks in advance.

Ray

Tractordata lists your 3320 at weighing between 2900-3570. I guess the difference would be whether it has a loader or not.
An 18-20' double axle trailer rated at 7000 lbs should haul it with no problem. Including the trailer weight you should be around 5000-5500 lb. and your pickup should be able to haul that.
The length trailer you need will depend on if you have a loader on front and any implements on the back. If you have a loader and a brush hog you may be between 18-20'. Then you'll need tie down chains or straps and binders.

I suspect your tractor weighs about 3500 lbs. Not sure what kind of hills you have there, but figure hauling 5000 lbs. or so. Make sure the trucks hitch is rated for at least that much, and the trailer too. Better to have too much capability than not enough.

.=I don't know what your truck can pull/haul, but I wouldn't get a trailer less than 20 ft long & brakes on both axles. Don't know if you have a loader now, but if you do add a loader in the future you'll be glad you got atleast a 20' trailer with brakes on both axle. I also agree on the 7k axles

I opted for a 20 foot trailer with twin 6000# axles with brakes on both axles. Your trailer is likely to be around when you have worn out your truck and maybe upgraded your tractor to a larger on. A 12k rated trailer is a bit heavier than a 7K but not that much harder to pull and you have much more capacity. A 20 footer will allow you to adjust your load so as not to overload your hitch which is the weak link in the towing on factory hitch. There should be a sticker on your hitch that gives you the towing capacity and tongue weight which may be as low as 500# or maybe 700#. You have to balance your load on the trailer so that you dont exceed the tongue weight. I have hauled my LS P7010 with FEL on my 20 foot trailer and had about 2 feet of trailer in front of the FEL bucket when properly balanced. It pulled very easy but I do have the 5.3L V8 engine in my 2007 1500 series Z71 Silverado. Brakes on the second axle cost me $150 additional. I ordered it from the factory that way and adding them as an afterthought might be much more.

The big issue is going to be that truck. Most V6 models are limited at 5,000# and your tractor and trailer are going to weigh that so forget a FEL and an implenment on the 3point.

Is your truck 2 or 4 wheel drive? If you are just hauling the tractor I would get a trailer that is 16 foot. The doolittle 7716 would be a good trailer. Get brakes on both axles. Pulling is not the problem. Stopping is. With v6 engine I am assuming half ton truck. A bigger longer trailer is always better but you dont have the tow capacity weight to spare. You also may want to look at getting some firestone airbags for the back to beef up your suspension when you are towing your tractor. That way you wont be shining low flying airplanes. Also invest in good chains and binders. Good luck.

I had an 18 foot trailer built last year with 3500# axles for my Mahindra 3616. It weighs right at 3000 alone and I figure total weight loaded with BH and FEL is around 6000#'s. i pull this with an 08 chevy with a 5.3. The tongue weight on my trailer isn't bad because my built an extended tongue for making sharp turns without cramming in a fender and I will never own another trailer without an extended tongue. Makes hooking up, working on tailgate and backing up a breeze. It also helped in balancing the trailer when loading. A 2@ foot trailer which is what I wanted would dragged the rocks in my driveway as there is a small dip and a gooseneck drug every time I pulled it.

So reading the manual on my truck the maximum trailer weight is listed at 4,400 ils and then there is another colume which is titled GCWR (I'm assuming this it the maximun trailer weight plus the load . That number is 9000 lbs. Does that make sense to you ?

GCWR is (Gross Combined Wheel Rating). This is the weight that the truck and trailer can weigh together. So what they are saying is the max trailer weight is 4,400# with the standard truck and equipment. So take the 9,000# and subtract the 4,400# and this means your truck weighs 4,600#. This is usually assumed with a 170# driver and 2/3rd fuel.

Now for example say you had a bed full of tools and a camper shell on and the truck and it now weighs 6,000# you would need to subtract that from the GCWR of 9,000# and this would give you your max trailer weight of 3,000# in this example.

No matter how you cut it your truck is not up the task of towing a tractor. Sorry.
