How to rid Coyote's

I grew up hunting for food and have no problem with it but for some reason it always bothers me when someone says they "took" an animal. What the heck does that mean? People almost always say "took" when they did it for "sport."

You killed it. You didn't "take" it. Own up to it. Especially if you did it for fun and you are ok with that. None of this P.C. BS. Just my opinion.

With all due respect - I guess you can "kill" something or your can "take" it's life... Semantics at play here, but that does not seem to be what bothers you. To be sure this was not some ,"Stand here and wait as I call my tame pet kitty to come over so you can shoot it," type of hunt. As you can see from the picture, father and son were hiking in the mountains with many feet of snow as part of a sanctioned and permitted Cougar hunt/cull in the Interior of British Columbia. Nothing to get worked up about, although I appreciate your point when applied in different circumstances to these. (Shooting animals inside fenced areas, animals that are tied up or raised tame from birth, etc...) Since moving to the states I have not been able to hunt a deer from a stand since that just doesn't feel right to me, but I get that with mostly private land down here you just can't simply take off on your horse or ATV and go find you a big Buck after a 3 day chase. That is how we did things back home, but a good way to get shot yourself down here with all the private property.

Using the word "harvest" or "take" is appropriate in my opinion to those who hunt a lot and are not looking to brag about "killing" something. We don't kill just for the sake of killing - there is always a reason or purpose. Have you met anyone who jumps up and down claiming they "killed" a lobster or a "cow" while chowing down at the restaurant? When hunting with Native American friends, the experience becomes even more somber and spiritual. Recall the great deer hunting scene from the movie Red Dawn for some background there.

Sorry for the rant. I mean no disrespect, but I had to defend my honor. :p

I had an acquaintance in Washington state who said he had eaten mountain lion before and said it was pretty good. I think he said he just shot it.

Sorry for the confusion. I guess I should have been more specific on a forum. Dumb me thinking everyone would be reading my mind & understand the context. My bad.

That's a big old pumpkin-head of a lion that your nephew got there. Looks to be in really good shape.

As far as dog breeds we had a mixed pack. Walkers, Black & Tans, Plotts, Redbones & some who were mixed based on somebody slipping a chain during the season of doggy love. We ran Raccoons, bobcats & lions (mountain not African). I'm too old, fat & crippled to go after the dogs now so no longer am owned by any. Most of my hunting now consists of just staggering around my place or a neighbor's. More like hiking with firearms than serious hunting. The wife is more likely to kill/harvest/take something than am I. With no kids at home we don't use as much meat as we used to........

Friend of mine fastens an old carcass of any kind to a post with wire so that it is very hard to get meat off of it. He puts a $10 driveway sensor that alarms you of movement out there and when the Coyotes come in the middle of the night he gets an alarm and he wakes up a drills them with his HP rifle. He sent me a pic of about 10 coyotes he had shot laying over a fence. Seems pretty effective if you live in a remote area or no houses nearby to scare in the middle of the night. I do not live in such an area. Maybe not the most sporting but .. coyotes are very sly dogs.. Pun intended.

I did not mean to attack your honor but in retrospect I can see how it appeared that way. My apologies. :drink:.
I actually don't have a problem with others hunting for fun in a responsible way (as your family did).

"Taking" is just so political correct sounding to me. Im definitely Not suggesting that "murder" would be better. It wouldn't. Even "harvest" sounds better but Im not sure why. Lol. :confused3:

Also, I apologize for the tangent.

No worries - I was just teasing you and myself both really. ;) I did have to think about the PC aspect a bit as I try to stay away from that if possible.

Arpt209 has introduced a novel way to rid places of Coyotes though. Just keep a few big cats around the farm!

I've read thru every comment here to see if anyone said what I have been thinking. I'm hesitant because everyone seems to have soft skin these days.
I see people say you can't hope to control their numbers. Some say you can't get rid f of them. Horsecrap. You can...but it won't be pretty...and it will probably be illegal. In Virginia, they have made their way back into the state in the last 15 years. 30 years ago, nobody saw a coyote. They had been eradicated from the state. When farmers, and settlers killed them of, most of the farmers probably didn't have an electric fence.....so they didn't have the same options we have now. it was a different time and they were harder than we are. This country wasn't founded by vegetarians. You had to get bloody just to put a meal on the table. Yotes were slaughtered. They were poisoned, shot, trapped, and killed any way you can think of. One of the most effective ways to kill them as poisoning a carcass. Another way that was extremely effective was chunks of meat on large hooks hung from tree branches. It is a hideous way for an animal to die. And it is indiscriminate. Dogs, large cats, etc, But it works. landowners and farmer took drastic steps to address something they considered a threat. People spent much more time on the land back then, so they would also find the dens....and smoke them out, and have snares, and other traps set up to kill them...as well as shoot the with shotguns. not sporting. Im only repeating what I have been told by older folks who lived in a time that was a bit harder than now.

You were right to have been hesitant. I'll shoot a coyote on sight, but I'm not going to torture it.

It is my understanding that coyotes do something strange, That is when one is shot or otherwise removed from the pack and the food supply is the same the litter size increases! I think that shooting coyotes is a good thing, but; discouraging them by removing potential food sources might make more sense. I have had good success with flashing LED lights. The coyotes think the lights are competition and eventually leave the area.

Hunting is a funny thing, in the way that so many people do it so many different ways. And they often dislike the way others do it. There are a few hunting customs around my place that annoy me terribly. I also see people abuse some of the rules that are enacted to make hunting possible. Shooting animals just for the sake of killing seems barbaric, yet hunting nuisance animals quickly becomes a sport. Some of the best days I ever spent in field were hunting groundhog. I'm told that a groundhog roast is tasty if you know how to clean them. The ones we killed were just discarded. They were considered a pest.
