How to rid Coyote's

What would be the weapon of choice if you wanted to dispatch one?

22-250, .222 223/5.56 243. The .222 and .223/5.56 are a bit shorter range for clean kills. .223 could be an AR or a bolt gun of your choice. The 22-250 and .222 and 243 are bolt guns for sure. I still like Remington 700's but Savage 110 or the newer 12 models, or Rugers or many other used or new models to choose from. I have a Remington 700 in .243, that would be my go to to start. Of course I have an DPMS AR-15 in .223/556 too. With proper bullets it would be fine also out to about 250 yards.

The choice of the right rifle is a gotcha type deal. When the coyotes have not been hunted for ages and are brazen, one is tempted to buy a 223 or similar pea shooter because one thinks it is going to be easy. Then you find that after you shoot 1 or 2, they suddenly are never in sight at less than 250 yards. That starts to become a problem since if there is a bit of wind blowing it can get awful hard scoring good hits with a 223.

That is why I suggest a 243 from the start. If you learn its ballistics and get a scope with an exposed elevation turret, you are very likely to hit every time, if you range properly. DONT GUESS the range !!! This way you avoid educating the coyotes and actually get to kill them and drive them away from the things that matter to you.

I'm good at 300 yds with a 7m-08, that's all the clear range i have.

I use my 30-06 deer rifle most of the time, but an AR is a good choice, as is any other center fire caliber. They die easy, it's seeing them long enough for a shot that is the challenge.

I've had them follow me at night while out mowing. They hunt mice that I disturb and tend to stay about a hundred yards back. Too far to shoot with my pistol. Hogs come a lot closer when mowing at night, but that's another topic.

For fun? Watch it suffer? Anyone you know who does these things, needs committed...

For food or as a protection necessity only. Kill shots only. If you don't "turn their lights out" immediately with the first shot, you are a failure. You did not wait for the PROPER shot and you did not arrive with the proper skills.

The words of a true sportsman. I salute you, Sir.

We have those big ugly Eastern Coywolves all around here. They finally after all these years admitted that they are cross bred with wolves and domestic dogs. Too bad in the NE they stay in the woods and run the thick hedge rows so you rarely see them to get a shot. Of course at night they will run right in the back yard sometimes but it's hard to get a shot at one.
I did see one a few weeks back wandering in the pasture. All I had was a 30 30 Winchester that would reach out that far (wishful thinking). I took a crack at him off the back deck at 150 yards and of course he could see me so was facing straight on. Iron sights at 150 years naturally I missed him and he took off across the field for another snap shot at 125 or so then one last one at his tail at 175. Unfortunately his luck was better than my aim and those crappy model 94 open sights and firing from a sitting position. Hopefully he will be back soon for a rematch with my AR.
A woman told me last winter her husband and a couple friends ran dogs and killed around 75 of the vermin. She said there are still plenty around it seems. There sure is no shortage of the things. Back in the 70's and 60's we never saw a coyote and rarely a red fox. Now all the fox are gone replaced by these things and there is an overabundance of fisher around too. Between the yotes and the fisher the neighborhood pets have taken a real beating.
Fisher are worse than yotes for killing small dogs and cats. They happily come right up and yank them off your porch and have no respect for people really. You can tell when they are in the area because all the rabbits and squirrels disappear followed by cats and dogs. We had one clean out all 4 of our cats before I could even figure out what was doing it. I finally snapped her in half with a kill trap and took very great pleasure in that revenge. The following year nearly got one coming home from work but it beat me to the ditch . I did nail one on I-87 not long after that. That one didn't quite make it but he sure did try his best. We haven't seen any the last few years and all the rabbits and small critters seem to be back in force again. Between the yotes and fisher its a never ending battle I guess.

what's a fisher?

Fishers are a subspecies of marten, and a tough one at that. Bigger than weasel or ferret, smaller that a badger and far more agile, mean as a mink when hungry or killing a coop full of ___ as if to deny others the pleasure. Might as well think 'wolverine-light' for the havoc they can cause. Certainly not as reclusive as wolverines, or as shy of human activity.
