How to reattach range lever on 4310

On my fathers 4310 - the orange range selection lever head fell off today. After we found it - it appears there is a nut and washer inside the head. We attempted to pry the top off - but it didn't come off and we didn't want to break it if there was a trick... I attached pictures of it - if you have the "trick" to popping the top ope - we would love to hear it.

Check to see if that yellow cap pops off.

It has been a while since I have taken one of these off, but I think that it snaps together at the front and back. Try working with the right hand side as shown in your pictures. Push the edge of the orange cap horizontally to the left so that it deforms slightly in from the edge of the black part. I think this will release a snap feature away from the black part so that it can then be lifted up and off.

Once you have the cap off, you will find a screw and washer inside (I do remember that). Screw the black piece back onto the range lever and snap the cap in place.

The black part actually has a ring ll the way around that is received by a full length indentation in the cap... so there is no single place to start the attack to separate it...
That said - the suggestion above to try splitting it apart from the said was just the ticket - once I got the screwdriver in there over the ridge - I worked it around and got the cap ff just fine.
The small bolt an washer received some Loc-tite and the whole thing is back together now. Thanks.
