Years ago I thought I remember heavy/medium duty mfg's attaching metal tags to the differentials and transmission to indicate they were running synthetics. This was done so someone wouldn't add non-synthetics or change it too early..

Can you still buy these tags? Or what do you do to identify when synthetics are being used?

I do most of my own services, but just in case i take it someplace and they do any work..

Just curious,

Brian

Hiya,

Amsoil still makes dipstick tags for identifying synthetic use. Part # G-38 (pack of 25 for $1.40) They have a bunch of other ID stickers too, just poke around the site.

I just (color code) paint the filler cap/plug.

UNPAINTED: regular dino oil

YELLOW: semi dino/syn. oil

RED: full syn. oil

Spot paint your oil storage bottle, can, or barrel with same color code so you don't forget the code!

Good idea, I read o a pickup board a guy telling us he took his truck in for service and after he was ready to leave the dealer told him he changed his oil too right away. The pickup owner had 18 qts. of somewhat new synthetic oil in it. A hundred dollar mistake.
