I keep my grease for my tractor in the barn. Every spring when I go out to grease my tractor I find that the grease has turned into a liquid mush requiring that I put in a new tube. I live in Georgia, so it does get hot in the summers, but it doesn't seem right that I should be having this problem.

Anyone else encounter this? Any suggestions?

Thanks

First question is what kind of grease are you using?

just switch to any "moly" grease ... a tad more expensive, but you use it for everything and never have to throw away the unused part of the tube .... stays where it is put , soft at cold temps, firm at high temps...

Thats not normal behavior for grease. Only a little separation of the oil from the thickening agent is usual. Its not like vaseline. Normal summer heat is not an issue. Is this a very cheap grease? What is its NLGI [thickness] number?

i'm in florida, and as the others said. al LIL oil seperation is all I get.

there are red hi temp greases. but I would look further.

is this some 1.89$ amber #2 walomart grease or something thinn like #1 or #1.5 grease?

anything #2 or better should hold together int he tube.

I have been using JD Polyurea grease for over a decade. I love that stuff. Never a problem of any sort. Stays soft and pliable in winter. Doesn't sling off. Works for about any application you can think of on a tractor or implements. Not that much money, which is especially true since it seems to outlast any other grease I have ever used.

I started using the JD Polyurea grease when we bought our rider in 2007. Right away, every time I picked up the grease gun, green liquid would leak from the piston end of the tube past the handle that pulls the piston back. I've not been really happy with it.

That's strange. I wonder if you got your from a bad case or something. I never have any problems, even in the heat of summer.

Grease Basics

That link tells the basics of grease. 70%-90% oil! plus thickener and additive. It would appear your thickener soap is breaking down, but note there are many different thickeners. I use a 5% molybdenum disulfide grease for all my high loaded pivot pins (loader linkage, steering) and Mobil 1 synthetic grease for higher speeds like mower spindles. I don't see any liquification of the MDS grease but any of the Mobil 1 outside the tube or gun will kind of flow like oil over time. Maybe you need to try a grease with a different thickener but remember they are not all compatible with each other. Not sure of the consequences but have read that when switching from sodium to lithium base grease for example (or vice versa) you need to clean all the old grease out. Not sure why - you would think the new grease would just purge the old grease out.

I've never had any problems either. JD polyurea is my favorite grease. I quite using Mobile 1 because it bled so much
