My son found a large nest of bees last night and the wife wants them gone. He got stung about 8 or 9 times by what i think are hornets. They were about an inch and a half long black and white striped. They were also pissed off. They chased him across the yard and a few made it in the door before he could shut it. I asked him about the nest and he said they came from the ground. These weren't your everyday yellow jackets.

So here is the question what can I do to get rid of them?

Thanks,

Steve

gasoline does wonders for getting rid of this type of problem.

I was thinking of gas or diesel out of a pump up sprayer.

MDSteve,

If they are the hornets/wasps I find, there is going to be an
above ground nest that is easy to destroy with an off the
shelf hornet/wasp spray.

I found a nest the easy way this weekend in my rotary cutter.
I happened to have just a little of the spray I used two years
ago. It foams when it sprays so it does a good job of
knocking down the bugs and keeping them from flying at you.

The wasps/hornets I have seen are building nests near the
ground, about 18-24 inches.... If it is a below ground nest
of yellow jackets, I don't have a clue how to find them the
easy way. I have found them the hard way twice and
really don't recommend this method! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Good Luck,

Deisel or kerosene will drop them faster than anything else I've tried, but are not the most enviromentally friendly things to use. If the nest is above ground, the bee spray works fine. Below ground I usually use small amounts of deisel applied sparingly. Best time to get the nest is a little after dark, as all the bees should be in the nest and settling down for the night.

Sounds like you have a nest of Bald Faced Hornets.
They are quite aggressive by nature and even more so
when distribed.

As already suggested, get a can of Hornet Spray from
Wal/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gifMart. I'd wait until dusk when the majority
of them are home and saturate the nest.
Then give it another shot in the AM.

A couple of times I have goten rid of them with a shop vac. Works best at dusk as the bees are returning and the noise of the vac seems to bring them out of the hole, so you seem to get them all in about 20 minutes.

Ground bees are the worst. Sparing use and bug spray be darned, IMHO--once you've found their hole, go out at night, pour about a pint of gasoline down the hole and light it, and enjoy the little blue flame. I'm sure there are a million reasons why this is a bad strategy, but it sure feels right to me!

What you describe sounds like what I call 'white tailed wasps'. They look like yellow jackets but the stripes are white rather than yellow. I have seen them nest in the ground and in sphere shaped nests in the barn and under the deck. I was stung once by one and that was enough. It felt like someone hit me with a maul. I give them a very wide berth. To get rid of them, I wait until night and use a wasp spray. One good shot is all it takes.

If they are in the ground and aggressive, I call them yellow jackets. I know there are lots of names, but that is beside the point. I do as you, and pour gas in the hole and throw in a match. Not a problem after that, unless there is a dry national forest nearby. Then I might think of another approach.

we just pour a small amount of gasoline down the hole and leave, do this after dusk, we dont light it the gas vapors suffocate the hornets.

My 3 year old grandson found a ground nest of them early this spring about 20 ft from the house. He was stung three times before he was able to get away. I found the nest and soaked it with an entire can of wasp spray. Haven't seen any wasps since.

u can pour the gas in the whole and not light it and the fumes will kill the bees.

I've always heard that, but lighting the gas gives me more satisfaction. Those little suckers need revenge!

Absolutely...I like to do that as well....but I was thinking if someone was afraid of starting a fire..and it getting out of hand, just pouring the gas in the whole would be safer. But I am with you...I love to strike that match....snap crackle, pop.

I've done the same thing. I had a nest in an outside wall of my house. I tried bug spray several times and they never seemed bothered. Finally, I rigged up the shop vac, flipped in on for 10 minutes, and they were gone.

The other strategy that seems to work well is using a squirt gun loaded with a dish soap and water solution. The soap sufficates them and isn't too bad for the environment. I have a big old super soaker that I use /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

I've been known to do the gas and match thing too /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.
