How to engage 4wd?

Hi all,

I am new to the forum but have read many threads. I have a Ford 1500/Shibaura SD2200 and was wondering how in the world do you engage the 4wd? Does the tranny have to be in a particular gear to engage it? I have tried pushing the left to the right of the seat down but it doesn't appear to want to move down. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I take it you come to a full stop, transmission in Neutral, clutch fully pressed before you engage the 4 wheel drive? any noise, any grinding?
with the engine off, rear wheel chocked, front axle secured on jack stand and then can you engage the front wheel ?
Does the front wheels turn freely by hand while axle on jack stand and wheel elevated a few inches off of ground?

I can't remember if it was in neutral or not. I will try again this weekend when I'm at the farm. I am not sure if pulling up or pushing down engages either as the labeling Is gone.

Thanks...may I ask where you got that manual? I think the sd2200 and the 1700 are very similar.

Hmmmm, I would have pushed it down to engage...though I can't read that little tag nearby.
yup, getting a manual would help.

The guy who I bought the tractor had the original manual and gave it to me. I scanned it, let me know if you need a few pages.

Although the Ford is made by Shibuara I don't think they are any thing alike. I know the parts are not interchangable.

jtaubrey, welcome to TBN. JC surely has a nice page out of the manual. The operation of that lever seems counter-intuitive. I suspect that when you tried to push it down, you were disengaging the 4wd and could not due to driveline windup. It's pretty common. Sometimes you can drive slowly forward while moving the steering back and forth to relieve the windup. Many of us with loaders just raise the front wheels and that relieves any torsional windup pressure. In the worse case scenario, you might jack up you front end to get the weight off the wheels. After you get it to shift out, shifting in/out several times may loosen everything up, but windup is common even on newer tractors with mechanical gear engagement of 4wd.

BTW: My dad used to sell lots and lots of insurance around Aubrey back in the '50s and '60s. He had an agency in Denton. If you are around a bunch of old Aubrey old-timers, ask if anyone knows Johnny Bean. He was a Native American who lived in an old 1-room shack down on Elm Fork Creek just off the old Hwy 428 bridge. It's about where the Greenbelt hiking area is. He had a brother who was married and lived in Aubrey, but Johnny never married and lived in that shack until he was forced to move. He could entertain himself for hours by stirring up a wasp nest and then using a single stick to swat wasps out of the air. He was so good at it that he rarely missed and I never saw him get stung.

Jim, excellent story, it sure brought some laughter early this morning. Believe it or not I can catch a fly with my bare right hand specially the slow flying fat ones. That what I used to do to impress my boys where they were little. I constantly told them , guys .. for crying out load, shut the dang door, flies are coming in. Once they came in I would look for them to land on some surface, would get close and like a lizard catch them with my bare hand. I could feel the fly buzzing. I would then take them to the garage with the boys following me and would tell them "I'm about to give this guy a good headache" and threw the fly real hard against the cement floor and it would hit the floor and bounce off and croak, boys sure had a great time.. that was cheapest entertainment we could afford then.:laughing::laughing:
