how to determine correct tire width settings

i have a massey 461 4x4 and looking to set the tires up a little wider. does the centerline point of the front and back need to be exactly the same?

Answer to your question is no. I like to make mine as wide as possible, my trailer is the limiting factor, have to keep them no wider than 81 inches. On the McCormick that I have the fronts are 76 inches overall width and the rears 78. Never measured the deere, whatever the dealer set them at worked just fine.

So how are you liken that new machine?

Well haven't picked it up yet. Had the used 1055 Massey loader installed and their servicing the tractor now. As for the wheel width if I measure outside width of rears I'm at 70 inches. The funny thing is if you set both front and rear wheels and hubs the same then they don't match up when measuring the centerline. For example the fronts come in at 56" and the rears at 60". So should centerlines of tires be equal front to back or should wheel/hub combos be set up equally? Can't wait to try it out though.

The only time wheel width is an issue (other than stability or clearances between obsticles) is when setting a tractor up for row crops. Then you would want center to center measurements to be the same to run in the furrows of the rows.
When you "set both front and rear wheels and hubs the same then they don't match up when measuring the centerline" would be normal. Tire width difference front/rear will account for that.
