I don't usually post these types of requests, but we have a couple MS SQL database files that we need to get converted to comma or tab delimited. I don't work in MS SQL, just have the .mdb and .sql files, no way to open/manage/convert them. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If anybody could open and convert these, it would be most appreciated. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Or if you know of any utilities that could convert MDB to CDL, that would be excellent.

Thanks in advance...

Hi Muhammad,

I sent you a PM but I'm guessing that this problem was corrected within minutes of you posting this message.

Try opening the .mdb file in Excel, then export it to comma delimited. In Excel, click File, then Open, then, in the type of files, choose "All Files". There are also choices for Access Files and for All Data Source Files, which may work on the .sql files. Click on the .mdb file, and it should appear in rows and columns. If there are tables within the .mdb file, a window will pop up and ask you which table. I just tried it on a .mdb file and it worked. If the .mdb file is password protected, it's more difficult. I don't know how to do it, but a friend who is a computer geek broke the protection on a .mdb file for me a couple of years ago.

Once you have the file in Excel, click Save As, then, in the Save as Type dialog, choose .CSV (comma delimited) or whatever suits best.

I hope the files are tractor-related, or someone may delete this thread /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In Excel, it tells me to use the "Get External Data" tool, and that of course locks up Excel. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Yes, of course the files are tractor-related! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

When you installed Excel, there was a choice of installing bunch of conversion tools. Since I have plenty of disk psace and unbounding curiosity, I installed them all. You may have to do something with the installation disk to get the conversions set up. Unfortunately, the one thing I forgot to install were the help files, and my original disk has been put in storage pending our new house...sorry.

Stupid me; I can convert them in my Excel program, and I do have a copy of Access 2002. If you want to email the file(s) to me as an attachment to don@donhorner.com, I can convert them and send them back. The .mdb files are MS Access. I'm not sure until I try it, but either Access or Excel should open the .sql files. I also have some .sql utilities hanging around that I haven't used. One way or another, I can give it the old college try. You should know by now that any of us are willing to do anything for you guys in return for this magnificent forum.

Muhammad;

Are you talking about a MS SQL Server .mdb file? If that is the case, that file contains the entire SQL SVR structure (tables, indexes, sysfiles, etc.) and isn't convertable per se. I'm guessing that you want some data contained in one of the SQL tables. Right?

Muhammad,

As an MS database consultant I do this kind of stuff for a living every day for clients. Please send me your files or give me and ftp site where they can be obtained. I will turn them around right away.

I can deal with Access 97 or 2000 and MS SQL Server 7 or 2000.
