My dealer put a hose from the pump to the backhoe that when un-coupled from the backhoe has to be connected together to keep from deadheading the pump.
Is this right? am I losing hydraulic power hooked up this way? I thought that it would hook up on my remote set in the back and use a detent to keep the backhoe operational? Any thoughts on this?

To me, that is just weird. Why not go back though the remote instead of looping back to the tank?
Wouldn't it make more sense to go though the remotes, move the leaver to the detent, and run the backhoe that way? What am I missing here??

I suppose you could. It works the same either way. I put the lever in detent and the backhoe always has power, as does the loader. That was the way my dealer had it set up when it was delivered.

Do you have any pictures of your setup? What is the model of your backhoe? This is how mine is plumbed. I have the LS frame-mounted backhoe.

Mine is set up the same way. This is the way the operators manual shows it to be hooked up. Not saying it won't work going back through the remote. Dealer told me it's better the fluid just dumps back into the housing than building heat and friction going back through the remote.

I'm not sure why he would come off the pump. As shown, one hose goes to the remote and the other dumps back into the housing. Is yours an LS backhoe?
