How Not to Lime a Field

Greetings,

This just has to be the worst.

This photo is of a neighbor applying lime to his field using a rotary spreader. I suspect half the county appreciates the dusting on their fields, the other half does not appreciate the dusting on their cars and houses.

"Pelletized" lime is the norm around here. And it's just lime.

I was spreading pelletized lime last year, and some from one bag had turned to powder...looked like your photo for a brief minute - I turned the tractor and traveled into the wind until it ran out...fortunately it all blew onto the other end of my field.

I don't see it as such a bad situation. The biggest loss is the money he is wasting on the lime that is blown away.

My neighbor limed 20 acres of pasture about a month ago.
They had a commercial company do it with a truck with rear spreader.
There was little or no dust and he was covering 40' wide on each pass!
I ask if they tested the soil first and they said no. ???
My 10 acres butts up to theirs. I have a 40' X 100' garden and tested the soil and it was neutral. (mid scale)
I think a lot of people lime that don't need to.

If pine trees grow in the soil, then it needs lime. Here, it's about 2 tons per acre the first year and then when tested the following year, it's less.


Lime takes about six months to do anything, so I'm wondering when your neighbor is planning on planting?

Actually all farming operations should be suspended untill nesting season is concluded. OR NOT, the farmers had all winter to grow crops and
all they did was service their equipment so they would be ready to disrupt nature. And who would complain about empty grocery shelves.?

And cease that manure spreading as well, tranplanted suburbanites are unhappy

Farming profit margins = razor thin. Doubt ANYONE spreading lime or fertilizer needlessly. Folks spreading don't necessarily do testing. Perhaps toying w/ gullible folks.
