A two year old Kubota U35 mini-excavator with 650 hours on it just came up for sale locally. It appears to be in decent shape except for a dent on the left side and some pretty worn looking tracks. Both are shown in the photo. The tracks really surprised me because I've seen excavators with 1500 hours on them with better looking tracks.

What's the verdict? Will these need to be replaced?

Pete

They look like they still got some life in them. One possible reason the tread is so low for so a time could be that they did alot of turning in place. That is some kind of hard on tracks.

They look like they may have been used in sharp rock or rubble, otherwise I have always been told to run em' till they fall off and it looks like they have quite a bit of life left in them. I would be more afraid if a track had a severe slice across it, but just the smaller chunks aren't so bad.

Look at the cleats that the drive sprockets run in, from the inside as well as the outside. If there are any that look bad you have problems. One bad cleat can ruin a track. Sometimes people drive over things that get between the cleat and sprocket and can rip or make a cleat loose. My understanding is some places can fix "some" track problems (cuts), but cleats torn are the end of the road. With steel tracks the drive motors will stall and no damage done.
