How much land do you have? Who has the most on here?

I'm not even close to the biggest with 45 but I'm 1 mile off the highway and 1/2 mile off the public road. We share the driveway with two neighbors. I can walk about 50 yards off my back porch and not even see my house through the trees. I'll take this 45 in the mountains where I can climb a hill and watch hawks hunt 100 ft below me in the ravine over a few hundred in a valley full of people any day. Quality over quantity every time. :)7

I think our retirement home will be in another state so we can afford to own some again. We only have five acres now, and I miss having more. We used to take morning walks along the logging trails and watch the critters.

I don't really know for sure. Can't say exactly. My deed reads, 1.08 acres more or less.
I know it's more than enough when it comes time to mow and not near enough when all the neighbors are home.

After spending quite a bit more time on my newly acquired 60 acres over the past month, I now know that "getting away from it all on your own land" may require a lot more than 60 acres. My 60 is on a State Road where cars whiz by day & night; Speed limit is 60; Of course they do 70-80 regularly. So I can still hear the cars driving by pretty easily, even when I'm at the far inside property line almost 1/2 mile away from the road in the woods.

So, it dawned on me, even if you own an entire square Section of land (1 square mile = 640 acres) & put your house right in the middle (again if it's a square) the furthest you can get from your nearest property line is "only" 1/2 mile. (I know, "only" 1/2 mile, but still)

Unless you have mountainous terrain, you're likely to still be able to hear cars.

To be able to get 1 full mile from your nearest property line, you'd need to own 4 Sections (2,560 acres)!

To be able to get 1.5 miles from your nearest property line, you'd need to own NINE Sections (5,760 acres).

To be able to get 2 miles from your nearest property line, you'd need to own SIXTEEN Sections (10,240 acres).

Of course I'm referring to property that has a paved hi-speed road along one property line like I do. And, of course, even if you do have such a road, in most cases you could probably put your house further back away from that road, which would be closer to another of your property lines; I don't realistically have this option as a lot of my acres are very low & have flood potential.

I know what you mean- our rural property is ~2 miles from a major road, and you can hear the occasional loud truck. Still a LOT quieter than where I am now, though! One time we were sitting at the property having a picnic lunch, and asked my wife, "Hear that?" She said, "Hear what?" "My point exactly!"

I live 5 miles from the railroad, and I can hear that at night. I can hear cars coming down my road for a minute or 2, before they get here. ( at night ). During the day, I can't discern noises, probably due to background noise.

We own 30 acres. It might be 200 if it was flattened out. The biggest farm I know of in northeast Missouri is Sharp Land and Cattle and it is 18,000 acres. They have a huge dairy cattle operation and goat milking operation along with a Christian Ministry and school. Bad thing is they could have done the same thing on 300 Illinois acres instead of the poor 18,000 Missouri acres.

I grew up about a mile from the Indiana toll road and I could hear the whine of the truck tires every night when going to be. Currently, we live about 2 miles from that same toll road and about a mile from another major highway and you can still hear the tires whine. I also live very close to the airport and less than a half mile from major railroad tracks. You get used to it.

I don't recall EVER being somewhere where I could not hear mankind if I listened long enough. I also do not recall ever not seeing contrails in the sky.

I also forgot to mention that I do not ever recall a night of star gazing and not seeing a man-made satellite fly over in the last 10 years. :(

Please report back here right away if you see a non-man-made one :)
