After spending quite a bit more time on my newly acquired 60 acres over the past month, I now know that "getting away from it all on your own land" may require a lot more than 60 acres. My 60 is on a State Road where cars whiz by day & night; Speed limit is 60; Of course they do 70-80 regularly. So I can still hear the cars driving by pretty easily, even when I'm at the far inside property line almost 1/2 mile away from the road in the woods.
So, it dawned on me, even if you own an entire square Section of land (1 square mile = 640 acres) & put your house right in the middle (again if it's a square) the furthest you can get from your nearest property line is "only" 1/2 mile. (I know, "only" 1/2 mile, but still)
Unless you have mountainous terrain, you're likely to still be able to hear cars.
To be able to get 1 full mile from your nearest property line, you'd need to own 4 Sections (2,560 acres)!
To be able to get 1.5 miles from your nearest property line, you'd need to own NINE Sections (5,760 acres).
To be able to get 2 miles from your nearest property line, you'd need to own SIXTEEN Sections (10,240 acres).
Of course I'm referring to property that has a paved hi-speed road along one property line like I do. And, of course, even if you do have such a road, in most cases you could probably put your house further back away from that road, which would be closer to another of your property lines; I don't realistically have this option as a lot of my acres are very low & have flood potential.
