How much extra cash is it worth going with your local dealer? $500? 1,000? $1,500? $2,000? There has to be a cut off point?
I would really like to go with my local dealer but he is a good amount more than a few other dealers that are 2+ hrs away.

Have you shared your pricing with your local guy? If not, do so and tell him you want to use him for recurring business. Can't he get within $500?

For me it would depend on how much it will actually cost to go pick it up and bring it home. Most dealers only deliver for free within a certain distance so when I had quotes that were over a thousand dollars difference I would have done the drive because all the dealers an hour to 2 out were only going to cost me one extra tank of fuel to go get it. My local dealership ended up working with me on price to get it closer to the others and in the long run actually beat them by a few bucks. So like mentioned here talk to the local dealer and let them know you want to do business with them but you have to do what is best for your wallet.

The dealer that's 2+ hrs away will deliver the tractor. It's included in the price he gave me b4 I asked him for delivery.

For me, it would depend on the size of tractor and dealer service, $1000 on a BX is a lot different than on an M Series and free warranty pickup and delivery or on site technicians. My dealer does all this and will drop parts off when they are in the area and even installed chain guards etc. on site free when they had a technician coming this way. It's really hard to put a dollar value on some of the things that may really make a difference in time and convenience.

Are you doing anything that is time sensitive like haying? If so go with the nearest/best service if not go with the best price. Even if it takes a day or two longer it doesn't matter, you're not under the gun of getting the crop in.

I'm comfortable with up to $1,000...... not $2,000. I just wanted to know what amount was within reason to see if the number I'm comfortable with is about what others are paying or if I'm being unfair or not. I understand every situation is different.

Depends on tractor and quality of dealer.

Unfortunately it's a personal decision. For some $500 is too much. Others several thousand for the peace of mind knowing that you have a dealer close by is worth it. The way I see it, for me, is there are enough dealers close enough to me that I'll never have an issue of not getting one to work on it if it needs it and I can do most things myself so I really don't care about having a "friend" close by. Then there's the money issue, I assume you work for it. Say you make $20 an hour and the local dealer wants $2k more over another dealer. That's about 150 hours of your life on this planet. That doesn't include things like time spent getting ready for and driving to and from work. If you work 40 hours a week that's almost a month of your life. When you think of it as "just money" it's easy to forget that you traded time away from your family and friends to make it. My number would be well less than $1000.
