Losing our landline number of 20 years would be a major problem. Hundreds of other people and businesses would have to be contacted. A PITA for sure. ----------------------------

I faced that problem when we moved, but was able to port the landline number to my cell phone.

No landline, but still have the landline number .

Well, it wasn't that he didn't know how to find out what google voice is, he doesn't want to know what google voice is. Because he hates google and all that it stands for.

You missed the joke.

My wife is deaf in one ear and the land line is what she prefers to talk on (she hears the best on it). So as long as it is available we will keep it. Ours piggy backs the cable and comes off the router so it is not the traditional land line but I patched it into the house circuit, that way she has it by the bed and in the master bath. I think it costs $20 a month or maybe less. I only use it to dial my cell phone to find out where the dog hid it. Usually in my coat pocket.

Personally, I think landlines have some distinct advantages over cell phones.
I know it will "always" work, no batteries to go dead.

If I call 911 I know they know exactly where I am. I don't have to wonder if my 911 center has the technology to find my phone or wonder if my phone is compatible with it.

If I call someone on a landline I know where they are and that they will have time to talk. I won't be interrupting some other activity.

911 is definitely a factor to consider before dropping a landline. Would be prudent to call the 911 center to see what technology they have BEFORE making the drop decision. Nothing worse than having your house on fire, calling 911, and they can't find you!

For 20 years we had spotty cell service down at the house. My new cell phone seems to have pretty reliable signal so I think I could get rid of the landline if I wanted to. Right now, the landline is bundled with cable and internet so the savings in getting rid of it is not that great. Working from home four days a week for the past few weeks taught me one thing. When you are on conference calls almost every day, having the full duplex of the landline increases the efficiency and understand-ability of the call. The worst is when 28 other people are trying to use their cells and are in speaker mode; the conversation is muffled, laggy, and overlapping.

Parked my wired phone number on Ooma VoIP. Under $5/month and I have a legit phone number to give vendors who demand a number, a number I don't answer. Let it ring to voicemail. And can check voicemail via web browser.
