How many hours of use is "a lot"?

I agree, 800 hrs and the engine is just broke in.

A few examples on different engines:

Owned a JD 4200 with Yanmar engine, sold it at around 1800 hrs, no issues.

Own a truck with CAT C13 and 41700 on it, rebuilt at 27000, no issues.

On truck, I've installed a APU ( auxiliary power unit) with a 2 cylinder Yanmar and 6200 hrs, no issues. Regarding a Thermo King mechanic, they can hit 25000 hrs.

Recently I've checked a Thermo King reefer unit and this Yanmar engine showed 32000 hrs. I have no history on that.

Our car, a 2003 Ford Explorer with a 4 ltr SOHC engine, which was called a troublemaker has 200000 miles on it and runs the same like we bought it used in 2007.

10000 hrs on farm tractors, that's the number I got from a salesperson.

My tractor has 8,000 hrs and runs like a top. My peterbilt had 22,000 hours before the motor needed rebuilt.

On things like a tractor how they are used and maintained factors in way more than the actual hours. I would rather have a 2,000 hr tractor that has been cared for than a 500 hr one that was abused.

Greatest engine wear occurs at start-up. Lots of cycles here and running cold a lot is the big killer.

Engine that I have in my generator is used in a lot of portable light towers, and folks note that they get upwards of 20k hours out of them for that use. My generator has only 670 hours on it, and while I suspect that it's got a lot of hours left on it I don't expect it to be able to do 20k hours (because it will never be run that much AND because its run times will be fairly short when compared to the light tower use, which has the engine running hours on end every time after starting up).

I would say that the bigger question would tend to be the hydraulic bits. And here it might be more so with seals and such than wear (though pumps, from what I know, tend to need require more extensive repairs sooner than do engines).

I bought my abused B7800 with 748 hours on it and now have added an additional 1,100 hours of abuse. Maintenance is pretty much followed, the exception being that I'm way past adjusting the valves (had it stuck in my head that they didn't need adjusting for a lot longer than what is actually recommended- selective reading!).

My tractor use and vehicle use is about the same as far as intensity. Sometimes both get worked close to capacity, more often they are not. Overall I average a little over 40 MPH when driving. 20~25 hours equals 1,000 miles by that measure.

That matches pretty well with my own estimate of 4000 hrs >>> 200,000 mi.
