I hear you, but in a world where grown men point a weapon with a human in direct line of sight and pull the trigger, firing into the air is no worse than the 2nd most unsafe practice.

I reckon with a little thought, there are probably a few more unsafe practices... It's bad, but so is hyperbole.

For several years I’ve considered NYE to be amateur night. So, I stay in and out of the way of stray shots, amateur drunks and overzealous rookie police officers on NYE.

Good idea. Best thing to do on NYE is stay home and go to bed early.

I have a bell (being retired Navy, of course I do ) that I ring-out at midnight.

Traditionally, a ship's bell would be rung 8 times at midnight (4 sets of 2) but only at midnight on NYE is it rung 16 times (8 sets of 2)... 8 for midnight (change of watch) and 8 for the New Year.

I still want a Nathan KLA5 to mount on the barn or somewhere for such occasions. Bought superb instructions to make my own air chime, but struggled with tuning and gave up when I barely had enough air supply for three of the five horns I'd completed. Two long, one short, then one long means 'approaching' (a crossing) different engineers have different 'styles' by far but the code is the same. Imagine hearing this 1/4 mi away vs faintly in the distance when the wind is just right.

When it comes to celebratory shooting the 20 Ga that the girls like can be aimed upward over my remote ten. All center-fires are shot into the ground several yds from the high deck. btw, interesting that I hear the most NYE mag dumps between my nabe and more densely populated areas.

I didn't need to. My neighbor must have started WW3.

BTW - I looked for an air powered diesel-electric triple horn to instal on the Taco Wagon. Found a REAL one. But with all the added air compressors, storage tanks, piping and cabin controls - over $5000.

Dec. 31 is my birthday, and I still don't stay up 'til midnight. More of a morning person myself, have trouble staying awake much after 10 or so.
As far as shooting off rounds at midnight, must be a regional thing. Don't think I've ever seen it done here. A few fireworks maybe, but no gunshots. Seems like kind of a waste of increasingly expensive ammo, let alone the safety risks.
