Saw this video of a shop in Pakistan I believe, that repairs a broken differential pinion. I can't imagine that the weld repair is any where as strong as the original metal. In addition, the heat from the welding has to have weakened the original metal. I would have liked to see how much runout it had on a dial indicator when they were finished.
I have seen them repair broken teeth on pinions and ring gears also, and I wonder how long they lasted, considering the way they overload and abuse the trucks.

I enjoy watching stuff like that, my guess is whatever it came off is old, well used, and probably has sloppy everything anyway so a little runout probably won't hurt it to much. Reminds me when I was in Thailand watched the Royal Thai Marines, weld purlins on a roof, they hardwired into a transformer on a power pole using old romex. Wore ski masks, and sunglasses to weld. Gave there sgt, my old broken leatherman very grateful, you think he won the lottery. Less fortunate Folks in poorer countries can make do with whatever they have available to them, some skills and ingenuity always help.

I've watched a few of the Pakistani repair as well as fabrication videos and it is truly amazing given the working conditions. No safety glasses not to mention barefeet or sandals while welding and melting iron for castings!
There seem to be no welding helmets, only hand held visors. Working on dirt floors in a "hole in the wall" shop or outdoors for that matter and doesn't look like any child labor laws.
