Doing a tree job for a customer today and I had a little bit of excitement. It has been a decent summer for Washington. Today it was 86 degrees. It has been fairly warm and dry. I had dropped a little Maple that was about 70' tall and dead at the top. Bucking it up into rounds for the home owner there was green moss all over the tree. Cutting rounds up against the trunk on the ground I start to see smoke. I thought maybe the bar wasn't getting enough oil for my Stihl 046. What happened was the muffler that is towards the tree had hot enough exhaust that it got the moss to burn.
I stomped it out with my hand and a bottle of water I was carrying with me. After that I was a bit more careful. Then a little later my Stihl 026 Pro did the same thing.. That is the one thing about my Husky saws the muffler isn't toward the wood.
The home owner did have a hose and water there for me just in case. Usually I don't have to worry about starting fires in the Evergreen State.
