How far can LEO go?

I guess I just dont see the big deal?

If a LEO wants to check serial #'s, I dont take that as them implying guilt.

Same way that when I get asked for ID for beer, I know they arent implying that I am underage.

And when a LEO askes for license, registration, and insurance, he is not implying that I have no license or the car isnt registered to me or I have no insurance.

Just routine checks, thats all. And If I am towing my tractor, and he wants to run #'s on it, same thing. I know he's not implying that it is stolen, just covering the basics.

Now if he wanted to search the vehichle, or enclosed trailer, I would take that as implying guilt.

I don't think a warrant is required to look at the serial numbers of a tractor on an open trailer. But, even so, unless the LEO thinks that you accidentally loaded the wrong tractor, it is pretty apparent he is trying to make sure you are not a tractor thief. Chances are, he suspects you are NOT, but wants to make sure.

Now, I hope they catch all thieves of all types, and I will let him look at the numbers on my tractor, and I don't even know that my tractor is not stolen....all I know is I did not steal it, and that I bought it used at a dealership, and I have a bill of sale.

But for things where a warrant is due process, I'll take the warrant approach, just to make sure that all the machinery of justice doesn't get all rusty, and seize up due to lack of use.

I have "nothing to hide" each and every day, but that doesn't mean I need someone stopping me all the time just to verify that fact.

I had a "trainee" who wasn't able to get out of the 3rd lane in a merge situation just west of Atlanta, and the fine officers that pulled him over asked for his D/l, med card, log book, manifest, as another was cutting the bolt seal on the back of the trailer. I grabbed my cell and called Dispatch, and they said just make sure they sealed it back with one of their seals. They opened the door and freight was piled up against a cardboard back that was ready to fall at any moment. Luckily they decided that maybe they didn't want to inspect that load. I often wondered who would have to put the stuff back on the trailer once they got it out, had they proceded. I have heard horror stories about a county in that same state that strips your stuff out of the car on the side of the road (seen that part) and then leaves you to put it back in (not seen this part).
Agriculture stations in Florida pull you in on the pretense of an Ag inspection, and SOMETIMES ask you what your hauling, but the main reason is to take a picture of the front license plate on the tractor and the rear license plate on the trailer. That way if the vehicle is reported stolen, they can tell which way it is headed. All the info is entered into a computer, some automatically, some manually, depending on the station and how busy they typically are. According to a good source, they aren't currently tracking (and matching) drivers and their log books, but the information is there, so it would just take a little bit of programing to be able to do that.
I agree that some of this is a good thing, but at the expense of a lot of honest drivers. I spent an hour on the side of the road while waiting on a "slow computer system" not too long ago. Since I make my living by the mile, and am limited by the number of hours I have to work, this one cost me about twenty five dollars that I will never be able to recoup. Most LEO's seem apologetic about this type of thing, as they are just doing their jobs, but instead of letting me go, (on a random traffic stop where I wasn't doing anything wrong), they continue to hold me till they get the computer to answer all the needed questions.
I could go on and on with this subject, but don't want to turn this into a rant...

What do you guys think of the new tech that is allowing police to automatically run plates on the move? Ie: no input required from police?

Personally i dont like alcohol checks etc. Maybe its because ive been caught with an expired inspection in one;) but its a fact of life. Its done all summer long up here (Thanks MADD:mad:). If running serials means the recovery of stolen goods then i guess im for it. It really isnt an invasion of my rights as im on a public roadway.

If the police really want to get sticky on it they can"invent" a reason to pull you over anyways. Up here at least, just the suspicion that you may have open alcohol in your vehicle or being under the influence is enough justification to pull you over. Remember that whole "Driving is a privilege not a right" thing.

Doesn't sound bad to me. Be glad you don't live in the inner city and have them bust the doors in, shoot your dogs and search the place in an effort to find drugs which are rarely found in that way anyway around here.

A few years ago I was with a few friends and was dragged out of a car with gun to me and stood in the rain being searched and interrogated by a young ST until the older one called him off. I guess he wasn't looking for my bible (was on the way back from a bible study). I now see where he as coming from. He was going around the back of the car and I reached down to move something I was sitting on. Bad move but I had never been pulled over before. He only pulled us over cause someone thought we had drugs. Only reason they had. Nothing else. Glad it wasn't of city cop or it could have been worse. I seen them do worse and not find anything.

Just being pulled over and having the VIN checked is inconvenient but it could be worse.

again they assume your guilty of something by you making the wrong move, LEO are train to look for the obvious and be one step ahead and then react accordingly, and pulling their fire arm from their holster and aiming it at someone because that scratched their ^&& doesn't justify or give them the right to handle you as though you are a criminal,....... we who abide by the laws shouldn't be treated as though we have broken a law,
actually I'm reading to much drama into this subject:cool:

earlier today I was thinking how much easier it would be for the LEO to catch the theft, and it is a rather simple plan,
I don't know why they couldn't have thought of this.....

On an interstate have a mobile sign that can be setup ahead of random exit ramps, Have the sign read ( Load check 1 mile ahead ) then simply set off the exit ramp and start raking in the criminals........;) it would be obvious that the ones having nothing to hide would stay on the interstate and those who had stolen stuff would exit.....
and to think I only graduated high school :D

Oh I'd never live in the middle of a war zone, I don't think my health insurance would cover me:D

seriously people can choose where they live and I happen to have chose the country, and for the most part the LEO's around hear are great Folks that are doing their jobs well, I know most of them, the question started from hearing so much on my scanner about running serial numbers on things in back of trucks or loaded onto trailers, I think I got my answer when was stated that perhaps was a ring of theft going on,...... My thought was if it were me towing my tractor and got stopped how would or could I explain owning a gray tractor,.....with nothing more than a Bill of sale as proof, would they except this as proper ownership? would they still want to run numbers? not sure if my tractor even has numbers:confused: I know they have seen me towing up & down the road many of times and never bother to stop me, I'm just thinking what if!

I really should be out doing tractor work today but the 2 times i went outside it made this A/C seem so nice:D
98* in the shade right now here in nth-GA.

It's funny you mention your idea. Here's an example of how far LEOs have to go to NOT infringe on your rights. Technically, in order to have a DWI check point there has to be signs informing drivers of the checkpoint and there has to be a way (side road, exit ramp, etc...) to avoid the check point after the sign. AND we can't sit and stop the cars that turn to avoid the checkpoint. For those that have been complaining of having to stop at a DWI check point, crack another cold one and look for the way out.

I see no difference between a car parked on my trailer, a car parked on my driveway, or a car parked on my lawn, or with its nose sticking out from behind the garage that can be seen from the street. Pulling me over for a seat belt violation (which is my fault and I deserve it) should not be cause for you to run my VIN number, the VIN number on my trailer, or the VIN number of a vehicle on my trailer. To me, that is assuming I am stealing something without reason.

I do agree with having my ID checked to make sure I am who I am telling you who I am. And along with that goes checking to see if I am a wanted person. Then, if I am lying or wanted, by all means, check out the rest of my stuff. Just don't do it if there is no reason to.

They should probably check everything you have every time they see you just because of that 'attitude' , sir. :)
