How does your garden grow?

   / How does your garden grow? #1,541
Hi All;

My wife went a little overboard on the garden this year with plans to can a LOT of tomatoes. She has over 36 tomato plants and over 40 various pepper plants. Her plan is to can spaghetti, chili, and salsa. I bought her a new pressure canner and made 36 tomato cages. I made the cages out of 39" 12.5 gage woven wire with 6 in. squares. I'm in the process of pinning them down with high tensil wire bent in a U shape. It's working pretty well. She's got a bunch of other stuff planted but most of it's asian vegetables that I'm not familiar with. I'll have to post some pictures later in the season.

We're just starting to get tomatoes, and they look good this year...if I can just keep the deer and rabbits out of them. They are worse this year than any of the 44 years I have been raising tomatoes.

That will be nice this winter. Opening up the cupboard in November and seeing all of those canned goods is like having a tidy little nest egg in your bank account. The big difference is that (so far) the government doesn't tax you on the food you have grown.

She’s gonna be very busy.

My tomato plants produced a bunch but they mostly ripened at golfball size. And these were Celebrity, Beefsteak, and Big Boy. It’s been hot.

At least they made it that far. One year I couldn't figure out where they were going; every night there would be almost-ripe tomatoes, but they never seemed to get fully red. Then one evening I noticed my dog was out there, scarfing them down as fast as he could eat. Between him, my chickens and turkeys, plus all of the wild turkeys I have running around there were none left for me.

Hey what is with picking green blueberries? Do you fry them like tomatoes? :laughing:

Hadn't picked them. Was just looking to see how they're going and tossed a hand behind them for scale. At this point, they've all ripened and been picked on that bush, I have several others that will be ripening over the next few weeks.

We have only four blueberry bushes and the yield is always great. Lots of green ones now... we need another month before we get excited. Birds do too, so we have them netted.

This year for the first time when buying oyster seed we had to furnish our tax parcels where the oysters would be planted. :smiley_aafz:

I tend to pick mine when they start to turn red; especially the ones lower on the vine. Varmints will eat the green ones too, but more so the ripe ones.

I agree. I also find leaving in sun until completely ripe diminishes taste and shelf life(not like they keep long anyhow).

We harvested our first artichoke from our meager 2 yr old plant and ate it with dinner. :cool2:
I think not easy to grow around here.

Well ,, my pumpkins ended up being a little bigger than my tomatoes,,,
I hauled them over to the grandchildren,,,

I only fertilized the plants once,, because of all the rain,,
I will try again next year,, with more fertilizer,,, :thumbsup:

Just can't do that around here! Maybe we don't have the right seeds though?

The seeds came from Walmart,, the packet cost less than a half dollar,,
the seeds were labeled "Giant Pumpkin"
I almost wonder if the plant is actually some sort of gourd, or other hybrid??
I would not try to make a pie out of them,,,

Plant them after everything else in the garden is almost done,,
Two vines stretched the 150 feet length of our garden,, covering EVERYTHING with giant leaves.
I saw one vine had today climbed 4 feet up a woven wire fence,,,

I picked a little okra out of the garden day before yesterday. Cooked it on the grill. Not too bad. {leaves are a little wind burned, but looking good for 130 mph winds}
