How does your garden grow?

Does anyone know why my cukes are coming in like round balls (golf balls) and then the growth is stumped?

Same variety as you have planted before? If they are healthy, maybe a mislabeled seed package?

My squash plants are working. Yesterday's pickings.

I recalled saving seeds from a squash that was planted with pumpkins last year. A little late, but I planted the seeds and have 100% sprout and with how fast they are growing, I am afraid to bend down to look at them. They might knock me over backwards. I have never seen such fast growth. We'll see if the squashkins produce anything but leaves.

The name escapes me at the moment but they are a "normal" variety because last year I messed up and planted a hybrid type. They got long and skinny and I didn't like them. So this year I paid more attention when picking out cukes. But I guess they could be mis labeled. The plant/vines are healthy.

We blanched and froze the last of our corn, about 18 ears. Picked a few okra, a couple of chili's, and a handful of Acre peas. Getting ready to cover the ground in black visqueen before tilling everything in and planting our fall garden in Sept.

I transplanted a few Jalapeno plants to fill out the row and to replace the ones that cashed. Did a row of Cayenne {with a bonus tomato plant} and one of Sweet Banana. The plants were not really big enough to transplant, but I was tired of waiting.

The mini sweet peppers continue to grow. They are already bigger than the parent peppers. I'm looking forward to see what kind of colors I'll get.

Looks good, the only time I ever mulched with grass (I used hay) I had mice all through my tomatoes that year. Of course the tomatoes weren't tied up on stakes either.

I have to weed my peppers, eggplant, tomatoes and gladiolus soon. All the heat and rain is making everything GROW!

More than likely it is just poor pollination. Lots of rain causes pollination problems as the bees don't do their work much.

Some varities have xtra pollinator flowers

We plant flowers in the garden to draw in more pollinators. Maybe they are not pulling them away from the veggie blooms. I noticed in the bigger melons that several of them were still small on one end, a sign of poor pollination.

I've been mulching my gardens in like this for MANY years and I've never had a mouse problem of any kind... It works perfectly for me, and I have little to NO weeding, it really makes a difference in how much watering I need to do.

I don't use any chem ferts, sprays or anything else, I just till all the mulch in at the end of the season, to feed next years plants... Basically, I'm growing my plants in compost, and it works perfectly!

It's not big but the two of us eat a fresh salad every night. And I don't have to bend over to harvest or weed it!

Looks good Paul. My Mamma is after me to empty the old cow water trough so she can use it for a planter. Those troughs cost so much though, I'm trying to find something else for her to use.

We cut a sun burned melon last week, and I ate a couple of split ones in the garden this week, but this is the first one that was ripe and right. Very good.

I noticed the first tomato turning pink today. Granted it is a cherry tomato but anything counts.

Our cherry tomatoes are coming in fast, and we picked the first few Roma tonight. The last few days of rain has the Beefsteak splitting before they are good ripe

Between 10 hours of the soaker hoses right on the drill, and off and on rain for four days, the peas are coming up. Still only one sprout of the Armenian cucumbers though.

This morning before work I worked in the garden a while. I saw Sugar Baby melon and Golden Queen sweet corn sprouts. Still no sign of any squash sprouts though. Disc up a spot and planted three rows of saved Crimson Sweet seeds.

Squash and Charleston Grey's are coming up good now. We have had rain everyday for about a week now.

Has been an interesting year for my Tomatoes this year. Plants started off great, got some good spring rains, put on some good blooms and fruit.....and then it got HOT. I have had a lot of Blossom End Rot, but now the plants have taken on some blight or wilt and are checking out. Sad thing is they are loaded with fruit, and I hope it can vine ripen before the plants are gone. Here are some pictures:

Amos Coli This is a weird shaped tomato but has become my favorite, followed by Lush Queen

I'm having a bad year for tomatoes too. We planted some in pots to help with the wilt, and it is not as bad this year. But they are all splitting and rotting on the vine before they get ripe. I have to pick them as soon as they start to turn, and let them ripen in the house. They are just not as good that way.

It has rained everyday for a week straight. I'm sure that has something to do with it.

In the better late than never section of the garden, the acorn squash seeds I got free from the Farmer's Co-Op {out of date} are all coming up after I had given up hope for them. In fact I have a much better stand of them than the ones I bought at Lowe's. Go figure.
