How do you trailer a 10' rotary cutter?

I may go look at a used Bush Hog 3210 this weekend to buy. It's a fixed deck 10' cutter that might work for my mowing needs. I probably won't be trailering it with my tractor often, but would like to be able to if the need arises. My question is, does anybody have experience hauling a cutter this wide? If so, do you just do it illegally? Get a permit to haul it? Would you maybe remove the tail wheel assembly and load it sideways? I don't currently have a truck or trailer large enough to haul my tractor, but might decide to upscale in the future. Any good feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

it farm equipment it is not illegal until you get to i believe 14 or 16 ft i use to haul a 12ft cutter all the time and haul dual wheel tractors thats over 10 ft wide all the time with no problems

That is news to me.
I thought that WHATEVER is on a trailer requires permitting if over 8 1/2 ft.
The O/P is talking about TRAILERING this thing, presumably on the road as a road vehicle.

As I understand it, towing it on the road behind a vehicle (under 25MPH) is "Ag Use" and is exempt while loading it on a trailer is not and requires a permit.

I have a 10' mower..

when I brought it home, I loaded it sideways on my trailer.. was fine that way.. only 6.5' or so.. maybee 7.. well within safe and legal.

normally I just pull it down the road with the tractor when driving between pastures.. i have it plaqued up real good so it is visible.

If you haul it wide.. you will need an overdimensional permit IMHO... maybee OD sinage as well.. ask dot..

I hauled a Deere 1008 twin spindle cutter (11' wide) about 150mi a few years back. Just moved the wheels in closer on the cutter so it would go up the ramps on our low boy equipment trailer. Backed it on, set it down on blocks, chained it down and away we went. Didn't get wide load permits (should have to been legal) but we made it ok. Towing it behind a tractor, or on the ground behind a pickup is completely legal, but when you load it on a trailer you need the permits.

FWIW, I thought I would mention that after using a 15' batwing, a 10' cutter did not work for me. Just too wide for my undulating property. I was always digging the sides in, tearing up my pastures.

Nor did I like it for brush work. I could take out a hedgerow with the batwing by running over it with one wing and not have to take the tractor through the brush. I also used to have a 6' 3pt rotory that I could back up to a bush or something and drop it down slowly to cut it up.

With the 10' foot, it was hard to see and control backing into brush that I did not want to tear up the tractor with by driving through.

If I go back to a big rotory I think I am going to go with a 12' single wing mower.

Back to the topic. If you are just mowing local, off set the mower to the right and flag it. If you are talking long range, like mentioned, turn the mower and remove the driveshaft if need be. A couple of pieces of pipe under the deck, some blocks and a pry bar will help spin it around on the trailer deck.

He had a thang for triangles - seems if the hypot is, say 10 ft that could fit a right triangle with a base of 8 ft and a height of 6 ft.

If that makes your head hurt, try the old 3, 4, 5 triangle - then double each side.

So IF (BIG IF) one edge could be blocked up about 5 ft 3 inches the width on the trailer would be just under 8 ft 6 in.

Yeah, I know, you would have to be better at rigging than trig'ing, but it COULD BE done and be legit without a permit.
