1961 Massey 85 we just bought. The casting that has the 3 point piston inside, and the shaft passing horizontal that the lift arms fastened to, has been broken and welded. Looks like a good weld, probably stainless rod, multiple passes. Probably doesn't even have the piston in there, as I can raise the arms up and down very easily by hand. Been thinking about how they could have done this. Must have had something up high on the hitch, and something else very heavy dropped on it, and drove the piston right through the casting. Have no idea what I'm going to find when I open it up. Anybody ever seen anything like this? Any ideas? Seller said he parked it several years ago, because the power steering had failed. In loading it, something broke in the gear box directly below the steering wheel, trying to steer it. Now the wheel rotates freely. This is my first exposure to Massey Ferguson, I know nothing about them, but I did read here somewhere that power beyond from the steering pump operated the pto clutch. Is it possible that the problem with the 3 point cylinder and the steering are all part of the same hydraulic problem? All related to the broken casting? because of the steering problem, it's still on the trailer. We're going to try to get it running prior to unloading it, so if it's junk, we can proceed right to the salvage yard.

The power steering has it's own pump, but there is many other parts that could fail causing the power steering not to work. After the tractor sits for a while you can lift the arms up, and let them down by hand so it still could have the piston for the 3 point still in it. Get it running, and see what it does. As how they damaged the casting on the 3 point there's no telling.

Pulled the hood, side panels and grille halves, got the fuel system cleaned up and bled, installed a battery and cranked it over with the lines cracked at the injectors yesterday. Looks like it has a rebuilt starter, but the plastic end on the solenoid was broken, and had a hose clamp holding it together, so it only cranked over a few times, but has compression and is not locked up, so that's a good sign. Pulled the starter and will take it to town today. We have a rebuilder here that I've had good luck with. I'll have him replace the solenoid and bench test the starter and try again.
Couple of questions: Upper fuel filter was clean and full of clean diesel. Lower filter looks like it might be a fuel pump the way it's mounted to the block. Is there a filter inside it? Does the bowl come off? The nut on the bottom has been heavily worked on with pliers. Can move it back and forth about 15 degrees, but didn't force it. I know I'm gonna need some manuals before long, but the ones I find on ebay etc., are pretty expensive.
I'd like to get a little further into it before I spend that much money. Are the manuals on CD any good? Anybody out there got any manuals they want to sell for a reasonable price? Are there any tractor salvage yards out there that might have some parts for this?

What you are referring to is a lift pump, the glass bowl is removable, and is designed to catch water, and other sediment. It should look something like this.

The bowl does come off, there is no filter in it, but the gaskets were probably seeping, thus the pliers used on the nut. You can get replacement parts if needed.

Nope - mine looks just like the primary fuel filter, large metal bowl, bolts on to the block in a 3 bolt diamond pattern. fed by primary filter, feeds directly to injector pump.
