How do you remove the joy stick from the housing on a JD 5300?

I have a JD5300 and housing on the Joystick has broken so I ordered a new one for JD but I can't figure out how to get the joystick off so I can replace the old housing. Any help will be appreciated.

According to the tech manual
early models
1 remove right wheel & fender
2 remove right hand control console
3 remove shield (P) the broken part?
4 lift boot to access square hole. use suitable tool to push rod B) to relieve tension on E-clip. Remove e-clip
later models
1 remove right wheel & fender
2 remove right hand control console
3 remove shields c&l

I looked at my machine. Depending on your wheel clearance, you may be able to remove the right fender without removing the wheel. Looks like Removing the right fender is required to access the screws holding the housing together.
