How do I stop Bamboo !!!

I wish I could just pull mine by the roots. I have the Japanese Knotwood...it's like Zombie Weeds. You can't kill it.

I've tried every herbicide known and can only slow it down a little bit.

I'd be mighty displeased with a neighbor planting that where it could travel.

I'm not certain that it won't but 2-4D is a broad leaf herbicide. That's why it doesn't kill grass. I would think round-up would but it also kills grass.

Is Bamboo not a broad leaf plant ??

Mistyblue you have to hit the knotweed at the right time a few years in a row.
Hit it after it flowers in the fall, then the spring and fall again. I use a generic round up.

I am definitely not an expert but in my estimation, no, bamboo is a grass not a broad leaf.

I have defeated bamboo this is how i did it, dig it up roots what ever you can (they are deep,sometimes two feet) then poison anything that comes up after by cutting it and then poisoning the stalk ( I used a small spray bottle with brush killer) do this for about two seasons and plant grass there from the start after you dig it up so you can chock it out. Its not really that hard but you have to stay on it.

Looks like your going to have too dig a 2-3 foot trench and put a barrier in.
Then fight with what comes up on your side till you get the roots killed off.
I'd paint the leaves with a foam brush with Roundup as the shoots come up.

I too have some of what I call cane pole bamboo not sure of the real name. between me and the people beside me... I did not plant it but it was planted and it does make a nice hedge row but I feel your pain... When it come up where I don't want it I just mow it down but it is a fast but not tall grower

This is an interesting thread, but I'm not sure what everyone is talking about. Some people's bamboo is probably knotweed and some people may be talking about actual bamboo, two completely different plants.

I have always wanted bamboo...I keep thinking of all the things I could make out of it....but it is threads like this and what folks have told me that have kept me from planting it...I sure would like to know of a field of bamboo close to me where someone wanted me to cut some...I would make something out of it...so if you can't beat it ...join it so to speak and make some furniture etc.

All you have to do is find a collection of old "Gilligan's Island" episodes. Those would give you all kinds of ideas. Attach a clam shell for instance, and voila, you've got yourself a golf club:laughing:

That's the way I handled my bamboo problem after I learned not to plant any more.

The other more permanent method to get rid of bamboo is to: MOVE!

I have both bamboo and cane on my property. My father planted clumping bamboo many years ago, which he used to stake plants in the garden with.
I have two large clumps that have been there well over twenty years. Each "clump" is about a 15' area. It doesn't not spread out. The clump is so thick that you can hardly see daylight through it.

Now, down by the railroad tracks that run behind my property, is a different story. This stuff started down by my aunts old place ( about a half mile away), and has spread down along the tracks, past my place! It is not thick, but sprouts up every few feet!

I'm not sure which is which, but I think my Dad used to refer to the clumping variety as "cane", and the wild stuff as bamboo???
