Hour meter operation

I have a NH TC40D.

The hours seem to rack up must faster than my old Kubota B8200. The B8200 tach was mechanical. The hour meter tracked PTO speed close. When I was mowing, at PTO speed, an hour on the meter was an hour mowing. But when running at mid RPM doing various chores, the hour meter appeared to work about about 1/2 time.

My TC40D though, seems to rack up an hour like clock, not matter what RPM.

Is that correct?

Hours meters on most if not all tractors did work off of the rpms to figure to me a true hour of work. Many if not all today are electric and have no relationship to the true work of the engine. An hour with key on is same as one with engine wide open. Just wait till they decide to use such on cars over the odometer.

It always bugged me about electric hour meters. They count an hour idling same as an hour at full throttle. I had machines that you could turn off one way but if you forgot to turn off the main switch the hour meter would keep running.

Many machines have 2 meters.
One is engine run time and the 2nd is actual work time.
Naturally the operator bills out based on run time and does his maintenance (warrantee) based on work time.

I even know of city contractors that leave the site with the motor running at idle IE bill 8 hours while actually having worked perhaps 2-3.

As stated new hour meters are on time not RPM's. It is actual run time so in that sense it is correct but no correlation to work load like the old mechanical ones. Easier and cheaper to manufacture. My Chinese generator hour meter keeps hours at 1/2 the actual run time. I know because I have timed it. The owners manual calculates fuel usage at 1/2 load. I guess they figured that in with the hour meter.
