I have a JD 2350 Utility Tractor with a 245 loader. This doesn’t seem to be a very common tractor but IMO it should be. It’s a 8,500 # beast with a 65hp 4cyl. diesel and a real workhorse. To shift in and out of four-wheel drive I use an electric rocker switch. It’s been working fine all along but suddenly it won’t shift out of four-wheel drive (I guess that’s better than not going in but still). The switch gets power because it turns the green indicator light on and off, but even when the light is off, it’s still in 4wd.
Has anyone experienced this problem or can you give me your opinion as to what the fix might be. I’m fairly new to tractors, especially bigger ones (only have an 8N before). Thank You!

This is when a workshop manual with a wiring diagram proves invaluable. Google "workshop manual for JD2350". The parts manual will help in seeing how the tractor is put together.

I have no knowledge about your tractor's 4WD. I think it likely that the rocker switch activates the indicator light and activates a relay. The relay, in turn, activates a solenoid. The solenoid may shift the 2-wheel / 4 wheel drive or it may activate an hydraulic cylinder that makes the shift. Perhaps someone has knowledge of your tractor or how JD engineered the selector during that era, but if you are comfortable with your own mechanical/electrical work get the manuals.

I had a similar situation with a solenoid operated 4wd. The problem was a bind caused the front wheels traveling farther than the rear due to turns. This binds the shift mechanism. Often reversing for a distance would let it work. Manual 4wd has the same problem but seems easier to release the bind. Do this on as loose a surface as possible.

I’m guessing it’s an electric problem but try lifting the front wheels with the loader to make sure nothing is bound up.

I agree JD 50 & 55 series utility tractors were generally some of the best utility tractors built by JD. 50 & 50 series MFWD stays engaged & is disengaged by applying sufficient electric current to solenoid(key 13) located under trans case. Sometimes reversing tractor direction helps MFWD to disengage. See photo below.

Carefully run in reverse a while and with some speed. Also, push the brakes pretty hard to come to a stop and see if that pops it out of 4wd.

Thank you all so much! I will try to buy a manual, but will also try to back up and hit the brakes to see if it will un-bind. If that doesn’t do it, do you think it would be wise to try to find the relay that activates the solenoid and replace it and or the solenoid?

I’ve been recently doing quite a bit of loader work and the front wheels seem to turn ok; at least going forward. I’ll try this tho. Thanks
