I just bought a beautiful little Honda 3813 from an older gentleman on Craigslist. It appears to have been maintained well, and it runs like a top. The previous owner did say that he had never seen a maintenance schedule on the timing belt, and thus it is probably original. The unit was purchased new in 1986.

- should the belt be replaced as soon as possible, given the age?
- is the engine free-wheeling safe, i.e., if the belt breaks do I risk having the piston head hit a valve?
- if I decide to tackle the job of replacing the belt, what else besides the water pump should I consider replacing while I'm into the tractor that deep? The compression numbers with the engine warm are 170 psi on each cylinder.

Thanks,

Kurt
