Can anyone recommend a decent to good home weather station. We live between Clinton and Shirley, Arkansas. Just went through a bad tornado. Had another one about year and half ago. We are becoming the new tornado alley. Want something to give us weather conditons and conditions suitable for tornadoes.
The tornado jumped our place. It traveled the full 10 miles between Clinton and Shirley most of the time on the ground, up the mountains and down through the hollows. Not a pretty sight.

Anyhow, looking for recommendations for a home weather station.

How about a battery/AC powered radio with the national weather service on it?

i doubt that there's a home station that can detect a tornado. i think the NWS does it by watching real time dopler radar looking for rotation.

I was thinking air pressure and other factors were used when issuing a tornado warning or alert.

Not quite. Tornado/Severe Thunderstorms warnings are issued using data returned from our(NWS)/co-operating agencies' Dopper radars, looking at the storms in four dimensions (N/S,E/W,Up/Down and time). A weather station wil give, when correctly interpreted, an idea on what is happening on the ground, and if one has observed the weather for a while, an idea that a change may be a foot.

I have an OREGON 968. I like it and it does what most wx stations do. None of them will give tornado indications. A good wx radio would be better for that. Tornados are reported by actual sitings more than anything else.

Here is the type of data you would get from my station. There are probably ten or so simalar station close to you. If you use Wx Underground ( can acess it from my site) to find them you could get forcast from any of them.

No idea how it works, or how much it cost, but have this waiting to be installed. Weather & wind station by WIND & WEATHER.

Honeywell makes one that also issues NOAA warnings. I think it's about $300. It's in the Cabela's spring catalog, but I'm sure you can find it on Ebay for much cheaper.
