Well I have a project that requires me to build weld up on a shaft where the bearing race surface is. Been contemplating this for quite awhile as to needing one for previous projects. Started out looking on E-Bay for a gear motor (Oriental Gear Motors), found one with speed control for $49.00 used. then found on E-Bay also two 1" flange bearings for $15.00.
Local repair shop that rebuilds starters / generators had the brush assembly $10.00. Steel beam has been in the family for about 40 + years as a door stop, wheel chock,
frame jack and ????????? over the years. Now it has a new coat of paint is looks as if it is new again!
Used 1" cold rolled steel for the shaft and turned and bored a brass collar for the ground. Also had to make a lovejoy connector to match the one that was on the motor.
Paint, bearings, motor, bolts, nuts , washers ----------total less than $100.00
This is only a small basic bench style but now I have an idea to make a larger one if need be.
Motor gear box 120/1 max RPM 16. Experimenting I found out that you have to get down to around 2 - RPM for a decent weld bead.
It was lots of fun to build and definetly killed some cabin fever blues!!!!!!!
