Clipped head nails can be problematic with code. From what I have read the problem is mostly inspector not the code. :)

The holding strength of a nail is mostly not the head its the diameter of the nail and how much of the nail is in the lumber.

Why use clipped head nails vs round head? More clipped head nails can be in a strip of nails than a round head.

My nailer can handle both clipped and round head nails.

Regarding code, go to the nailer's website or the nail's manufactuer for more information on the code. There can be nail schedules for both for clipped and round head nails.

Later,
Dan

Dan, What you say makes sense. Still thats the way it is. I would want full head nails on things like shear wall I think but for many applications both would be good. I want to go back over my siding. Now 6" on the outside and 8" in the field is the nailing schedule. When I put mine up, well I didn't nail off as I should have. Richard

I would put up with a lot of problems with a nailer to avoid problems with an inspector.

Even if clipped head nails are allowed, if the inspector you get doesn't think they are, you have a huge problem. I have never met an inspector who wanted to be educated by a builder or an owner.

The nailer guns were a great investment. These shoot a full head nail. I thought I might not use them enough to justify having one. I was so wrong. We built storage, gates, and anything else that got in the way. They have been a big help and I think done a better job. I have used 8d and 16d I guess they will use anything in between. I highly suggest one if you are making boxes or cages, huts or hovels.

My Hitachi NR82 (full head version) was purchased 16 years ago and was already well exoerienced.
I use mine professionally, so to speak and use so many nail strips that I once purchased 25 cases at an auction.
NEVER have I needed to spend not even one cent in repairs on it!
Perhaps my secret is that I frequantly tighten all screws and I also spray wash it down with WD-40 prior to most new jobs. ( The WD40 sort of rinses off all crud and adds a fine lubricant to surfaces)
I also use the WD as my internal lubricant every few days, Short squirt each time.

ROOFING nail guns really like the WD-40 wash down, Gets rid of that gunky splattered asphalt gunk in no time at all. For me better than gas or any other solvent.

While many praise coil nailers, I much prefer strip guns.

Just drop a coil and youèll understand what I mean!
Strips can be stuffed in your pouch or even in your back pocket.
Try that with a coil!
