I have the tractor split in order to replace the clutch components. Friction and pressure plates were easy enough to remove, but I'm having trouble removing these 2 bearings. Novice mechanic here, so exotic tools aren't on my bench. I would appreciate any advice.

KG,

Any time we have a need to remove a bearing we use a pulley remover to remove the bearing off of a shaft. We don't care if the bearing gets damaged during this process. On putting a new bearing on the shaft,I bought a a conical shape bearing heater to heat up the bearing to slide over a shaft with slightest resistance. Heat here in your case actually makes the bearing even tighter where it is located in the flywheel. A three prong puller can be reversed where it can grab the inside dia of bearing or outside dia to pull it out out of a hole or out of a shaft. I think your bearing is pretty small to get get the jaws of the puller in.

Cold also works same as heat does. On stubborn stuff I have seen dry ice put on a metallic piece to shrink to facilitate prying put. Is there any lip you can grab a hold of inside a bearing ? I'd spray some penetrating oil around the bearing and try to pry it with a small pry bar and if it get damaged so what. My plan B would be using a small block of dry ice to shrink it a bit before attempting to pry it out. There are puller designed specifically for pulling a bearing out of a hole but have not seen small enough to accommodate a very small pilot bearing.

JC,

ps. Any close up pic?

I have never replaced the throwout or pilot bearing on your model tractor. The throwout bearing should not be that much of a problem. The pilot bearing can be a problem a small slide puller is nice to remove pilot bearings with. What ever you do, seek professional advise prior to trying to "FORCE" the items out. It can get expensive quickly replacing damaged parts. Step away and after an indepth study you are still unsure how to remove the bearings, consult with the service manager at the local dealership.

KG,

I you want to part with $65 you can buy one of the pullers linked below. Again, if you only damage pilot bearing to pull it you're doing just fine.

JC,

SLIDE HAMMER BLIND HOLE BEARING GEAR PULLER REMOVER PRO:eBay Motors (item 350221157490 end time Jul-09-09 16:22:32 PDT)

I had to destroy a leaky seal on my brush hog's gear box to replace it. No harm was done and the new seal was installed with no damage. You are replacing the old pilot bearing.

Pilot bearings or any bearing that is of the sealed type and pressed into a closed bottom hole is easily removed with some grease. Fill the hole with grease and find something that is as close as possible to the size of the inside of the bearing, a wood dowl will even work. Hit it with a hammer and the bearing is hydraulically pushed out.
