Re: Hinged Box Blade to pin or not to pin? How\'d Udoit

KJ,

Thanks for the sympathy, I can sure use it right about now!

I know it wasn't the same problem. That was caused by the previous owner. Seems he had just bought the rig, put 4 new tires on it and went across a field a little too early and got stuck. Now, I'm not an expert on it by any means, but even I can use the hoe and loader to pull the tractor (had to do it to yesterday...). Seems that the previous owner didn't think about that but instead put new chains on the wheels and rocked it back and forth. In doing that, he snapped off gear teeth, but he must have gotten it out, because it was driven with broken teeth. That extra drive caused "bad" things to happen and with the binding there was more breakage. Total tally included input gear from the Sherman aux trans, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, R, countershaft and pinion gear. Plus the trans case and diff case were both cracked. Ouch.

That's why I spent 6 hours moving it from the scene of the crime back to the shop without allowing the rear wheels to rotate.

Oh well, I dusted off the book, cleaned out the shop and am off to do some disassembly.

Wish me luck, (I'm gonna need it)

I'm going to wish you luck, but I have every confidence you don't need it!

John, I'm sure your disappointed but you'll have it running in no time. It'd sure be great if you'd post pictures as you go so we'd get to see whats involved with tearing one down that far and reassembling it. I am still enveous of your setup having two machines would make life much simpler especially if one had a hoe. Good luck on the rebuild keep us posted, I just wish I was closer I'd love to come help hand you wrenches and learn how to rebuild one, funny I've worked on cars my whole life (shade tree mechanic) but when I do something bad to my tractor I go running to the dealer, I guess its just the mystery of whats behind all that cast iron.

Steve, KJ,

Thanks!

Pictures? good idea. Will bring the wife's cam out this am and take some as I go. Did a couple 2-3 hours yesterday. There are some "issues" that I didn't address when it went together the first time. Mostly the right frame rail is bent and it made getting it together a real bear. I think I will fix that first by cutting and welding. This is a working machine and it was broke and fixed many times in it's life. Both rails were cracked, fixed, cracked again, fixed again and cracked when I got it. Unfortunately, the dumb sob (me) that did the last fix didn't notice that it was crooked from the prior fix. Oh well. Live and learn (die and forget it all) as they say.

Oh, here is the link to my online photo collection. I did some interesting things in the repair/rebuild process the first go round. The power steering wasn't operable, so the column had to be rebuilt, the cylinder had to be rebuilt and I had to create the hydraulic lines with tube and a bender. Came out ok.

Mostly, I just take pictures to help me get the stuff back together. Even with the repair manual and the parts manuals -- photos help a lot.

Re: Hinged Box Blade to pin or not to pin? How\'d Udoit

I saw the very interesting hydraulic cylinder thread on parts/repairs.
I agree totally that photos are a great helper when trying to reassemble anything. I'd much rather have a photo also, because I have some sort of perception problem if I only have the drawings. Weirdest feeling trying to percieve them correctly, but with a photo in hand, piece of cake!
