high sulfur off road fuel

I don't know anything about sulpher content, but off-road diesel is all I have used since I bought the tractor - close to 90 hours, now. My oil distributor tells me it's the same thing as the on-road diesel, just dyed a different color to indicate that the road taxes have not been paid. I save almost 50 cents a gallon - taxes must be higher, here. I still pay sales tax because I didn't try to qualify as an agriculture operation, but no county or state highway taxes.

My distributor will not deliver for free unless I get at least 300 gallons, so I haul a 55 gallon drum to him for refill. Most of the large farms around here have large tanks, however, and get regular deliveries of off-road. I'm told almost every agriculture and construction implement in the county uses it. I did have to fill out a short form indicating who and where I am and how I will use it. I assume this is so the state can check up on me to be sure I'm not using it in an on-road vehicle. No problem for me; I don't own any diesel powered cars or trucks.

My local country gas station sells high sulfer off road diesel. It is different stinks a bit more when burned. But to all reports it is actually beter for the engine, lubricates the injection pump better.

Ahh - maybe that explains it.
I run all kinds of diesel equipment at work everyday. Then, when I run my tractor at home, I notice quite a stink from the diesel exhaust compared to the stuff at work. Maybe that explains it. I get my off-road fuel at a small station in town and it must be high sulfur off road fuel. Going to check it out the next time I get fuel.

You may want to read down the page. There is a discussion of diesel vs furnace oil. There IS a difference in the fuels.

Kevin,
Yes there is a difference. Here where I live in KY , furnace oil is kerosene, and then there is road diesel and offroad diesel. Not the same things. I think straight kerosene will destroy your injector pump after a while, especially in the older diesels.

We buy our fuel in bulk delivery. We use red dyed fuel (off road) at the farm. The only difference here in Michigan is that we pay no highway use tax on Agricultural fuel. The tax amounts to about 25 cents per gallon.

It's a Federal Law that if you are caught using red dyed diesel in your diesel powered vehicle, you are liable for a fine of up to $5,000 and that's for the first offense. MDOT (Michigan Department of Transportation) officers tend to check farm trucks at weigh stations and personal farm vehicles at flea markets and sales. All they use is a clear piece of vynil hose that they stick into the filler tube and withdraw fuel. If it's red, you are in BIG trouble.

1*Makes sense to me as there is no reason to add more sulfur in order to waive the highway tax.
2*Here it's 150 gallons but here are some ways around that.
a* They will deliver less if they are already going to be in my area for other deliveries.
b*You can make arrangements to have your tank at a place they are going to deliver to and they will fill your tank too.
c* You could buy your fuel from somebody who gets fuel delivered.

You actually have inspectors from the state dipping into your fuel tanks? Isn't that a little invasive? /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I would think they would need a reason to search a vehicle, like the police do, other than the fact that you are at a flea market. Overall this sounds like a trick they would pull here in Jersey.....
